DISCRETE AND INDISCRETE WAYS OF EXPRESSING AN ACTION AND ITS ATTRIBUTIVE CHARACTERISTICS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Keller Irina Mikhaylovna

Information About Author:

The article deals with the ways of expressing attributive characteristics of actions by means of structures of discrete nomination (word combinations) and units of indiscrete nomination – single-word nominants having a complex semantic structure and denoting both an action and its qualitative characteristics at the same time. It also studies formal and semantic features of these units of nomination and their combinations. The article examines the factors determining the speaker’s choice of naming actions and its attributes. The main factors are cognitive (the influence of the character of perception of an action and its attributes – atomistic or holistic), linguistic (the possibility of analytical structuring and semantic expansion) and pragmatic (the speaker’s pragmatic intentions).

Keywords: attribute, action, perception, discrete nomination, indiscrete nomination, explication, implication, semantic structure
