The article reviews Russian and foreign concepts of translation competence, including the most detailed PACTE model; compares translation evaluation vs. translation competence assessment. It also states the difference between approaches to assessing translation made by students against translation made by professional translators, as well as points out particular features of translation competence assessment for teaching purposes.

The notion of mistake or error is often central in translation teaching methods, as can be seen in the way teachers assess students’ work: their role often consists entirely in correcting mistakes. Some specialists in didactics point out, learners may be anxious by the fear of committing mistakes. An error may be a valuable educational tool in translation training, a teacher will often be able to help students make progress only if he/she is aware of the type of errors students are prone to making so that they understand the source of their errors in order to avoid their recurrence. The article also reviews Russian and foreign concepts of errors, their status and assessment for teaching purposes.

The article reviews sight translation studies attempted both in Russia and abroad, in order to prove the necessity of establishing theoretical and methodological basis of this field of translation. The authors prove it necessary to include sight translation as an independent activity into translators training program, as opposed to its current status of an auxiliary or preparatory exercise for others types of translation.

The authors consider the notion of revision, define its status in translation teaching, analyse methods of revision and self-revision and prove it necessary to include revision as an independent activity into translators training program in higher educational establishments.
