1 | This article considers peculiarity of realization of stereotypical metaphorical models connected with rethinking of the conceptual property of «solid» in Russian picture of the world and in M. Tsvetayeva’s lyrics. | 1114 | ||||
2 | This article is devoted to investigating the images of grain and bread, which happen to be universally shared among agricultural-based cultures, as they are metaphorized by means of verbalized forms in Russian, English and Italian languages. We will present the common cross-cultural substantial context that lies at the basis of figurative reelaboration of source concepts and describe lexico-phraseological units embodying the images of grain and bread as part of motivational-figurative paradigms. An analysis of metaphoric models reflecting projections of these images in various conceptual spheres pertaining the material and non-material world is provided. The linguistic representation of cognitive metaphoric models is realized by means of figurative words and expressions. They include: metaphors (grain ‘very small and round shaped particle’), metaphoric derivatives (breadwinner ‘a person supporting a family with his or her earnings’), phraseological combinations (take the bread out of the mouths ‘deprive someone of his or her livelihood’), proverbs, sayings, and catchphrases (bread and circuses!). Our analysis will show a shared process of metaphorization in the languages under examination. On the one hand, the image of grain serves as a mean of metaphoric representation for 1) small and round shaped objects, 2) small parts of a whole (a structure or a surface), 3) a little or insignificant amount of something; 4) the source or the central part of something. On the other hand, the image of bread is used metaphorically to indicate 1) means of subsistence, 2) work or its results, 3) prosperity, 4) misery, 5) food in general, 6) positive moral characteristics of an individual. We can observe that in Russian, English, and Italian the figurative and symbolic semantics of grain and bread correspond. Such consistency is due, firstly, to similarities in food preferences among agricultural-based cultures, and, secondly, to the influence of pre-Christian and Christian traditions. 3 | Introduction. The article is devoted to the cognitive and semasiological study of the metaphorization of taste characteristics (delicious, sweet, sour, fresh, etc.) that make up one of the significant segments of the conceptual gastronomic metaphor. Aim and objectives – to study the directions of metaphorization of figurative units motivated by adjectives with the original semantics of taste properties; to identify the bases of figurative analogies; to describe a fragment of the Russian language picture of the world presented by the system of figurative means of the language reflecting the characteristic food metaphor. Material and methods. The research material was made up of about 200 figurative lexical and phraseological units of the Russian language, reflecting the metaphorization of the properties of food products, metaphorically motivated by 15 adjectives. The study is based on the theory of the figurative structure of the language, in particular, the method of describing the lexical and semantic field is used. Results and discussion. Cognitive grounds for metaphorical characterization of various objects of reality are the nature and evaluation of sensations that occur in the subject of eating: 1) pleasant/unpleasant taste, 2) pronounced/ weakly pronounced taste, 3) high/low degree of suitability for eating. Conclusion. The figurative words and expressions, motivated by names of taste qualities, metaphorically characterize objects and phenomena of various spheres of reality: appearance, emotional state, character and behavior of a person; style and content of speech and artistic works; financial significance of economic objects; human attitude to the phenomena and events of life. 4 | Introduction. The article investigates the lexical means of the symbolic and metaphorical representation of the concept of “Fire” in M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” in terms of their language semantics and cultural connotations, analyzes the significance of this artistic concept for expressing the author’s worldview. The purpose of the work is to investigate the ways of linguistic representation of the concept of “Fire” in the text of the novel “The Master and Margarita”, to identify aspects of their metaphorical and symbolic interpretation at the verbal and conceptual levels, to study the role of this concept in the artistic worldview of the novel. Material and methods. The methodology of work is based on cognitive, linguoculturological and systemicstructural approaches in the study of the figurativeness of the language and artistic speech used in the field of semantics of linguistic units and stylistics of text. The empirical material consists of figurative words and expressions (143 units) which represent the concept of Fire in M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita”, as well as fragments of the text demonstrating its symbolic and metaphorical functioning (160 contexts). Sources of definition of linguistic meanings and mythopoetic symbols were published explanatory and encyclopedic dictionaries. Results and discussion. In M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” were defined the lexical and textual fund of artistic representations of the concept “Fire”; there were revealed methods and techniques of its textual implementation. The cultural and symbolic meanings of the concept were investigated in the mythology of different cultures. The aspects of the metaphorical and symbolic interpretation of this concept were described in the artistic worldview of the novel “The Master and Margarita”, as well as its role in expressing the author’s intention. Conclusion. The concept of “Fire” is represented in the text structure by a multitude of direct and metaphorical lexical representations expressing various aspects of the manifestation of the fire element through a system of zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, somatic images. Images of fire form the basis for a metaphorical description of a wide range of phenomena of the surrounding world (parts of the human body, precious stones, celestial bodies, everyday objects) and the human inner world (feelings, emotions, conditions). The symbolism of this system of images has deep mythopoetic roots and translates the main meanings of the ideological content of the work. 5 | The article examines the functioning of visual metaphorical images of food in polycode texts of the modern Russian-language Internet space. The wide distribution of polycode texts in the digital environment, their transformation into an active influencing tool of mass communication determines the relevance of studying various mechanisms of interaction between visual images and verbal textual means in the information space of modern man. The purpose of the work is to study visual metaphorical images of food in texts of various discursive nature and genre and stylistic affiliation; in identifying the functions, pragmatic potential, areas of denotative application of visual metaphors with gastronomic semantics; in the description of typical situations of their use in Internet communications. Methodology and methods. The methodology of the work is based on cognitive, discursive, linguoculturological and system-structural approaches to the study of imagery of language and speech, used in the field of semantics of language units, text stylistics, semiotics of images, discursive-pragmatic analysis of Internet communication. When analyzing the visual components of a polycode text, the experience of predecessors in the field of analysis of the composition and typology of visual images that form the iconic element of its complex structure is taken into account. When collecting material, methods of sampling from open Russian-language Internet sources, methods of systematization and classification of verbal-iconic complexes were used. Visual metaphor was studied based on theories of figurative structure of language and cognitive theory of metaphor. The research material is presented in polycode texts, the iconic component of which includes images of food – products, dishes, situations of absorption and cooking. A total of 230 texts were analyzed that included or accompanied the visualization of a gastronomic image in the form of a photograph of an object, a photo collage or a drawing. The study demonstrated that in the modern open Russian-language Internet space on the websites of the media, trade, financial, public and private organizations, one of the effective influencing tools is visual gastronomic images included in polycode texts. Together with verbal elements (inscriptions on images, titles and text fragments of publications), they convey meanings of an allegorical nature, which, as a rule, are based on the figurative semantics of linguistic expressions (chop cabbage ‘make money’), the symbolism of precedent texts (“porridge from an ax” – the name of a Russian fairy tale) and phenomena (state flags, banknotes, leaders of states). The functioning of a visual food metaphor is associated with the manifestation of linguistic creativity and language play, creating a comic effect to attract the attention of the target audience – potential readers and clients. As a result, frequent visual culinary images were identified (cabbage, pies, porridge, grain, peas, mushroom, jar, pan, knife, cook), associative phenomena associated with them, creating a metaphorical and expressive-figurative effect (money, finances, animals, household items, attributes of professions), stable metaphorical models (cabbage – money, pie – financial and political value, kitchen – politics, cooking – carrying out social activities); The communicative areas of application of visual food images in polycode texts (economics, commerce, advertising, politics, entertainment) are characterized. Food metaphorical images are stable and are part of language as a culturally conditioned semiotic system. They are fixed in linguistic units and are consistently reproduced in communication, including using various methods of visualization through iconic elements of polycode texts.
