1 | One distinguishes two types of syntactic construction in the Khanty language: the active and the passive ones. In this article we study the peculiarities of their formation and use in the dialects of the Khanty language. This work is also concerned with the use of a noun (the agent) in the form of the locative in the “passive” construction, which can be explained by the influence of the category of definitiness/ indefinitiness typical of the Uralic languages. 4 | The migration of the youth from rural areas to big cities is one of the biggest global problems nowadays. The article deals with similarities and differences in town perception by young people aged 18 to 26, who belong to different cultures (Russian and Chinese). As a result, specific socio-cultural factors and differences in town perception among the youth are revealed, the ways of axiological conceptualization of the city by the representatives of the two cultures are distinguished and, as a result, the causes of the undergoing territorial and social transformations are identified, which allows predicting the prospects of town development in future. 5 | The paper discusses the issue of the development of the English speaking communicative competence at a technical university, which is thought to have become one of the most essential skills of today’s university staff. Due to this, many of the Russian universities are now reconsidering professional requirements to the staff, believing that good knowledge of English could contribute to faster integration of their universities into global scientific community. National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia, has designed a number of professional training programmes for the English language acquisition tailored to the specific needs of the academics. The paper focuses on the course outline “English for Scientific and Academic Communicative Purposes” aimed to develop foreign language communicative competence for professional communication within academic society at the level B1/B2 (Independent User) of European communicative competences. During the course, which has been primarily created for the staff of a technical university, the major features of the academic style of communication, academic grammar and vocabulary as well as the structure of the presentation and the ways of presenting scientific contents are studied and practised. Consequently, upon completing the course, the university staff are able to share the results of their professional activity with their foreign colleagues. The learners are expected to obtain the skills of making and delivering a presentation on their professional profile, duties, and challenges, which appears to be one of the major outcomes of the programme. 6 | Introduction. The article is focused on the structure of multicomponent terminological combinations and major functions they perform in modern English-language media discourse on environmental issues. It investigates how the term structure may change in the course of time, determines the main trends in the structural development of terms typical of media ecological discourse and discloses their functional potential. The aim of the study is to identify the main structural types and functional characteristics of multicomponent terms, recorded in the English texts created by popular science environmental journalists. The object of the study are multicomponent terminological combinations of English-language media environmental discourse. Material and methods. The research has been performed using the texts published from 2021 until 2022 on the site of the English-language online journal Earth Island Journal which is the media arm of Earth Island Institute – an organization that supports environmental activists and leaders working to protect the biological and cultural diversity. The sample number equals 212 multicomponent terminological combinations. A variety of methods such as observation, modeling, systematization, quantitative estimation, structural and functional analysis have been used to conduct complete research of the terms under consideration. Results and discussion. The results show that multicomponent terms are an important component of modern English-language media discourse. The analysis of the research data obtained has allowed identifying the main structural models and key characteristics of multicomponent terms used in media ecological discourse and specifying the major functions they perform. Conclusion. In conclusion, the practical value of the obtained results and the future prospects of the research have been outlined.
