Intertext as an element of the film text internal organization (based on the French film discourse)
DOI: 10.23951/1609-624X-2025-4-25-32
The theory of intertextuality that arose among French poststructuralists and was initially used in the analysis of fiction, is now implemented to study the texts of other discourses, such as scientific, political, media and advertising discourses. The film discourse is no exception. The focus of this study is analysis of the intertext as one of the elements of the film text internal organization in the framework of the French film discourse. The purpose of the article is to identify the key features of the intertext as an element of the film text internal organization and to identify and systematize the functions that the intertext performs in the French film discourse. The research material was 250 modern French films from the period 2010-2024. In the course of the study we used a set of methods, especially the methods of theoretical analysis and generalization, the continuous sampling method, the methods of content and discourse analysis, and the descriptive analytical method were used. The results of the study made it possible to come to the following conclusions: considering intertext as elements of the text of one discourse that are present in the object of another discourse and taking into account the creative and multimodal format of film discourse, we identified real or artificial elements of other discourse types, in particular, advertising, artistic, media and Internet discourses presented in the film as the main object of film discourse. We classified these elements into real ones, i.e. belonging to the real world, and artificial ones that are specially created for functioning (fully, partially and as references) within the framework of the plot of a certain film production. This dual nature allows the intertext to act as an element of the film text internal organization. As main functions of the intertext in a film we defined integrative, plot-forming and imitating ones. Aesthetic and comic features are identified as additional functions of the intertext. The cases of using the film text itself, i.e. elements of other films, as an intertext in the construction of a new film production are considered separately. The prospects for further research lie in the field of studying the manifestation of intertext in film discourse, as well as considering the intertext nature and functions in other discourses.
