The article examines the transition in Russian universities from traditional term papers, viewed as a means of accumulating and verifying theoretical knowledge, to team-based project work. The authors explore such concepts as "team," "teamwork," "team skills," "team skills assessment methodology," and "project-based learning," establishing a correlation between team skills and the professional competence of educators. The paper provides examples of teamwork among fourth-year students majoring in 45.03.02 "Linguistics" during their team project internship. A list of eight questions for faculty project supervisors is proposed, which helped evaluate the methodological value of replacing traditional term papers with team projects, as well as the development of students' soft skills. The implementation of the project-based approach has led to significant progress in developing students' productive teamwork skills and their psychological readiness for effective participation in team projects. However, the study highlights that this form of learning has certain drawbacks for the development of independent research skills, as it deprives students of the opportunity to complete the full cycle of writing an individual academic paper. On the other hand, team project work offers distinct advantages over individual term papers in the training of future foreign language teachers: it provides more opportunities to simulate a real work environment, fosters practical teaching skills through the exchange of ideas and methodological insights, and develops key pedagogical competencies such as group cooperation, role distribution, and task planning. Therefore, a balance is required between fostering teamwork skills and maintaining the depth of scientific research training traditionally provided by individual student term papers. Further research is needed to integrate team projects as an option for completing coursework into the university practice of training future foreign language teachers.
