«WOE FROM WIT» IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY MARY HOBSON // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2010. Issue 8 (98). P. 33-36

The article reveals a comparative inquiry of the recent translation of «Gore ot uma», fulfilled in 2005 by a British translator Mary Hobson. Considering ways of translating the comedy's free verse, nationally, cultural and historical based units, names of characters etc., much attention is devoted to the key concept «um» transfer.

TRANSLATIONS OF “GORE OT UMA” INTO ENGLISH: IN SEARCH OF THE RUSSIAN MENTAL CONCEPT’S EQUIVALENT // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2013. Issue 2 (130). P. 76-82

The article studies national peculiarity of the mental concept “um”, revealed by Alexander Griboyedov, determines its translation entails great difficulties due to extensive semantic potential of the Russian concept exceeding to that of its equivalents in English. Russian and British modern professional translators take various approaches to cope with the practically untranslatable Russian comedy.
