| 5262 | The article presents Tatiana Meiko’s (Tomsk) appeal to the genre of prosaic short stories in the context of children’s literature formation traditions and development trends. At the turn of the XX–XXI centuries many children’s writers develop such genre types as nature, autobiographic short stories, mini tales (fairy, about animals), anecdotes / humorous short stories, horror stories, etc. It is more rarely when writers create short stories in the tideway of paroemia and philosophic-lyrical story traditions. Such writings including T. Meiko’s short fairy tales present the phenomenon of “common” (I. Arzamastseva) literature, which appeals both to children and adults. | 5263 | The research project deals with the analysis and description of the axiology of the academic medical discourse in the English language. In relation to our research the concept ‘academic medical discourse’ consists in the following: this type of discourse is scientific communication the aim of which is the concept of detailed transfer of information steps (on the corresponding subject: diagnostics, treatment and recommendation) which needs to be reported, analyzed and discussed for acceptance of the main results. Some examples from the texts of academic medical discourse containing the phraseological units representing opposition ‘good –evil’ have been shown. In this paper research is conducted on the material of contexts of the journal of the American medical association and medical journal of New England. As a result, the concept ‘academic medical discourse’ is considered as scientific communication the aim of which is the concept of detailed transfer of information steps on estimated strategy of diagnostics, treatments and recommendations (see: strategy of all dangers, services of a hospice, correlation of the bill, “grapevine”), exposed to discussion for acceptance of the main results. The analysis of the examples from the texts of academic medical discourse contains phraseological units representing opposition ‘good –evil’. It is claimed that the evaluation presented in the opposition form “good – evil” can be correlated to the use of phraseological units being one of the ways of expression of a positive/negative evaluation in the contexts of academic medical discourse of different linguocultural communities. | 5264 | The year of 2019 is the anniversary of two writers of different eras – A. S. Pushkin (1799–1837) and V. V. Nabokov (1899–1977). This study did not initially include the goal of identifying the “bringing together “of two writers, but an analysis of the wind motive led to results that broadened the ideas about the creative dialogue between Nabokov and Pushkin already established in literature. The aim of the work is to analyse the wind / storm motive in V. Nabokov’s novel “Otchayaniye” (Despair) in relation to cultural tradition. Material and methods. Motive and intertextual analysis based on the work of B. Gasparov, I. Silantyev. For understanding of the functionality and archetypical semantics of the wind / storm motive, the studies of K. Nagina and E. Nikanorova are significant; among the research work on Nabokov, the baseline for this study is, firstly, the article by A. Dolinina, who described the principles of using V. Nabokov to use Pushkin’s intertext in the novel “Otchayaniye” (Despair). Results and discussion. When analyzing “Otchayaniye” (Despair), it was considered that the narrative motive is often implemented in conjunction with an anonymous motive, therefore the focus of research attention was not only the wind motive / storm motive, but also windcalm. It was revealed that the wind motive in the novel is polysemantic and “works” to reveal the main themes and problems in the novel, “involved” in the design of the author’s concept of the work. It is associated primarily with moral and ethical issues: the definition of boundaries and the essence of free will, crime and punishment. It was found that the motive functionally considered in the novel correlates with the archetypal image of the storm, which traditionally embodies above the personal will and trial, the condition of passage of which is the strength of the moral basis of the individual. For the immoral character, who is the central hero of the novel, Herman (a murderer who is not experiencing remorse and torment of conscience), the wind turned into a storm, carries the semantics of punishment (“frightening” wind, “murderous drafts”). The study revealed the use of Nabokov’s method of increasing gradation in the design of the wind motive, which accompanies Hermann’s doubts and moral throwing, turning into a storm at the moment of final despair. Stillness arises at the climax points of the plot (the murder of an imaginary double and Herman reading his own, which must justify, but expose his mediocrity, “story”). If Herman interprets windcalm as the indifference of being to human life, as the absence of God, then at the author’s level “silence of being” emphasizes Nabokov’s idea of free will: nature does not give signs and does not interfere with a person’s moral choice. The analysis of the wind motive made it possible to reveal, the Pushkin’s fairy tale “Skazka o Rybake i Rybke” / About the Fisherman and the Fish as a significant intertext of the novel; the final “Otchayaniye” (Despair) correlates with the outcome of the tale: the character who wished to become a “despot” not only of his own being, but also of the lives of others (to take the place of God), remained “by the broken washtub”. Conclusion. This study made it possible to expand the understanding of the intertextual connections of the novel by V. Nabokov, to clarify the author’s concept of crime and punishment. | 5274 | Introduction. The studying of the peculiarities of readers’ perception of poetic texts is one of the relevant problems of modern stylistic. The theory of regulativity as one of the text`s stylistic communicative directions, allows identifying of means and methods of text influence on the addressee. Based on analysis of regulatory tools and various types of structures, in O. E. Mandelstam`s lyrics the nature of vivid images that appear in reader`s mind in a poetic text can be explored as a form of communication. Material and methods. The hypothesis that the features of the regulatory capabilities can be judged by the reaction of informants who perceive the text and its parts, is tested on the basis on the receptive experiment based on the indications of the participants’ language consciousness. O. E. Mandelstam’s poetic texts of different years were the study materials: «In the dark sky, like a pattern» (1909); «Up out of an evil clinging pool» (1910); «How do I love the strain of living» (1930); «We are living, but can’t feel the land where we stay» (1933). The choice of these poetic texts is caused by its ideological significance and time of creation (the first and the second poem belongs to author`s early lyrics, the last two – his latest works). All these factors allow us to follow the nature of their perception by informants, taking into account the reflection of the evolution O. E. Mandelstam’s poetic picture of the world. Results and discussion. According to conventional five-point scale of impact, respondents gave the maximum score to poems related to the author’s civil lyrics. It is connected with the theme of these poetic texts (for most informants it seemed urgent and familiar), its ideological originality and its large number of regulatory methods that was used in text, srtuctures and its specific (in the poem «We are living, but can’t feel the land where we stay...» – vivid metaphors and epithets; in the poem «How I love the strain of living...» – a number of epithets). Conclusion. As a result of this research, data about factors that determine regulatory potential of the text and the nature of the interpretative activity of addressee were obtained. Among them, we can note thematic and ideological originality of O. E. Mandelstam`s poetic texts, the number and variety of lexical regulatory tools and structures used by author. | 5275 | Introduction. The coverage of the women’s issue was one of the predominant themes in the works of famous English writers of the XIXth century and gave the key to understanding the place of a woman in the society and her role in the development of the social progress. In this context, an appeal to the fiction of B. Disraeli (1804–1881) is relevant. The objectification of female images in his novel ‘Henrietta Temple: a Love Story’ (1837) is illustrative in terms of evolution of the woman role and her life attitudes. Aim and objectives. The aim of the research is the study of the translation peculiarities of the novel’s key female characters taking into account the current trends in the literary and social processes of Russia in the 1850s – 1860s. Material and methods. The research material included the original text of ‘Henrietta Temple: a love story’, as well as its anonymous translations published by ‘Library for Reading’ [Biblioteka dlya Chteniya] in 1859 and ‘Translations of individual novels’ [Perevody Otdel’nyh Romanov] in 1867. Historical literary, comparative, typological, and structural methods were used in the research. To identify the peculiarities of the main female images interpretation, an analysis of the original text and its translations was carried out using a methodology including five main image parameters, such as character introduction, verbal portrait, speech characteristics, description of actions and author’s attitude. Results and discussion. First acquaintance of the Russian reader with the fiction by B. Disraeli began with the translation of the novel ‘Henrietta Temple: a Love Story’ 1859. The novel of the English writer was consonant with the general trends in Russian literature of the mid-19th century and was twice anonymously translated. Each of the translations reflected not only the basic principles of literary translation, but also the position taken by the translator in relation to the issue of the role of women and their rights in Russian society. In this aspect, the interpretation of the key female characters of B. Disraeli’s novel is of interest. At the center of the narrative there are female characters involved in a love triangle: Henrietta Temple and Catherine Grandison, as well as the image of the main character mother, Constance Armine. Conclusion. The analysis demonstrates that not all the parameters of the Disraeli’s female images are reflected in Russian translations. The peculiarity of the version published in the ‘Library for Reading’ [Biblioteka dlya Chteniya] in 1859 was that the translator significantly reduced and simplified the original text of the novel due to the journal policy and translation norms, which led to simplification of new woman images, in particular Henrietta. The author of the translation published in 1867 managed to better reproduce five main parameters of the female images and recreate a new ideal of a woman capable of defending her interests and realizing herself. | 5278 | The paper outlines the types of discourse-pragmatic functions and kinds of propositional-semantic content associated with the Loc-marked Agent constructions in Eastern Khanty. Selected methodology includes contrastive morpho-syntactic and contextual analysis of the narrative corpus, attending to the information structure and linguistic meta-data. Based on discourse analysis, it is hypothesized, that a wide cognitive faculty facilitating the structuring of information and specifying the roles of the participants, governs the choice of grammatical means, i.e. the construction types. It follows from the analysis of pragmatic, semantic and grammatical features of interacting discourse participants that specific system’s grammatical resources identify with certain pragmatic-semantic properties. The Loc-Agent constructions are prototypically used to express the events with more than one argument with competing topicality. The Loc-Agent constructions (agented passive and “ergative”) manifest a parenthetical shift in centrality of the discourse referents, where a secondary topic referent is competing with the primary agentive topic. This is expressed by temporary promotion of the secondary topical referent to the Loc-marked S grammatical relation. N.V. Polyakova. | 5286 | Introduction. The onymic vocabulary in the category of German pseudo-borrowings is currently understudied. While pseudo-borrowings are traditionally considered in the etymological and word-formation aspect, in the practice of analysis of the onymic category and its etymological segments a great role is played by the selection of onomastic subclasses of pseudo-borrowed onyms, the constellation of which is determined by the nature of the empirical material. The appeal to ways and models of word formation is conditioned by the necessity to highlight the structural and systemic features of the studied units and their role in the pseudo-foreign naming by means of the German literary language. The aim of the paper is to identify the ways and models of onym formation in the German pseudo-borrowings class. Material and research methods. The empirical basis for the study is 190 pseudo-borrowed onyms, selected according to the criteria of posteriority, impaired reversibility and belonging to the class nomina propria from a number of German-language print and online editions, including translated comics, onomastic registers and regularly updated dictionaries Duden and DWDS. The dictionary search was carried out mainly with the use of marker words containing the German confix “pseudo-”. The epistemological basis of the analysis is the structural-systems approach, the implementation of which is aimed at revealing the structural features of the studied vocabulary set. A corpus of general and special scientific methods was used to analyze the material. General scientific methods were the methods of logic (analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization) and statistics (quantitative methods, the method of grouping), private scientific (linguistic) – methods of structural linguistics (method of component analysis and traditional-complex method). Results and discussion. Most of the empirical corpus segments of this study consist of pseudo-Gallicisms of the first and second groups as well as pseudo-Latinisms. Although the Gallicisms of the second group and Pseudo-Latinisms are derived from elements borrowed from dead Gallic and Latin, they continue to be used in German literary speech. A great variety of subclasses are represented by pseudo-Latinisms, among which there are anthroponyms, a large number of ergonyms, pragmatonyms, peisonyms and a class of fictionyms in the subclass of anthroponyms. The names of comic book characters translated into German, represented by the class of fictionyms and the subclass of anthroponyms, are formed using a variety of word-formation models. In addition, one of the fictional character names considered in this paper, in the segment of pseudo-Hispanisms, has the greatest lexical length (11 elements). Thus, it can be assumed that thanks to such a variety of ways to form lexical units the authors and translators of comics manage to convey the expression and, to a certain extent, the distinctive features of certain characters. The word-formation possibilities of pseudo-usage onyms in German depend on which segments and sub-classes form the empirical corpus. Conclusion. The proposed material is intended to expand the understanding of the nature of pseudo-borrowings in German literary speech and to deepen the differentiation of onymic and appellative categories of this class of vocabulary. The results can be used for lexicographical and educational purposes, in translation practice and in the teaching of modern German. | 5297 | The article discusses the problem of definition in logics and investigates the role of it in management discourse based on academic textbooks. Describes applied research problems and paradox of definition analysis. The author introduces the concept of definition and identifies its types and characteristic features. The understanding of the definition content is formed due to logical systematization and classification. Distinguishes and describes nominal and real, explicit (classical, functional) and implicit (inductive, ostensive) definitions. Gives the techniques, similar to definitions (description, characterization, explanation, comparison and differentiation), defines their didactic purpose. The study provides linguistic realizations of definitions from academic texts, reveals common logical mistakes of definitions. | 5298 | The article deals with the peculiarities of using language quantifiers which express time measurements in Modern English. According to a widespread conception in the literature of linguistics and philosophy, space and time are deeply intertwined with each other, both in language and in underlying concepts. As both space and time can be measured the category of measure and its language representatives are inseparably connected with space-time system. To gain a better insight into the relations between time and measure the revealed language means have been gathered into certain groups, which form the structure of the functional-semantic field representing the category of time. The core of the field is represented by the metric system of time measurements and some traditional units used in Englishspeaking countries. The latter part of the core is rather small in number. Of special interest are inaccurate and unspecified measures, forming the peripheral zone of the functional-semantic field under discussion. | 5299 | The aim of this work is to discuss some specifics of translating Czech children poetry to the Russian language. For the analysis were chosen the poem called “První pohádka (Princeznička na bále)” (The First Fairy Tale; Princess at the Ball), written by well-known Czech poet Frantisek Hrubin, and its translation “Принцесса кораллы свои потеряла” (The Princess Who Lost Her Beads) by Mikhail Landman. The analysis exposed the specifics of the translation such as: more phraseological and idiomatic expressions than in the original poem and more developed and concrete description of the places and characters. More specific descriptions of the places could lead to activation of imagination in child mind. The increase of phraseological and idiomatic expressions is justified by the adaptation of the Czech poem into the structure of traditional Russian national literature. The name of the Czech protagonist “Honzik” corresponding to the Russian Ivanushka-Durachok and the basic ironic modality of the poem were not altered in the translation. The translator may have left the original names for one of two reasons: either to avoid the necessity of changing the names of other characters, leading to a monolingual structure of the translation, or to create an opportunity for the Czech names to obtain new associations of their own in the Russian language. The ironic undertone of the poem’s finale is kept in the translation but it is presented by different means.
