| 5406 | The author considers the method of concept analysis as a research tool in literary studies, which could be also used in literary translation. The article states that the concept “dreary” has a dominating role in A. P. Chekhov’s narrative “A Dreary Story”. This concept represents semantic monotony and estrangement, which gradually reveals its existential potential. Therefore a philosophical subtext is logically found in the narrative, but its preservation in a translation is a great challenge for a translator. The author analyses one French version of Chekhov’s narrative. It was written in 1926 by a sociologist, writer, translator, music and literary critic, Boris de Shloezer. He oriented himself to one interpretation of this narrative which was done by a philosopher-existentialist, Lev Shestov. It allowed the translator to communicate a general philosophical idea, an existential tragic element of “A Dreary Story”. Nevertheless he did not pay enough attention to the text structure with its pervaded motives, which are organized by the title concept dreary. As a consequence Shloezer did not succeed in making an adequate French translation of “A Dreary Story”. | 5413 | The topic of tourism development in Russian regions is very relevant today, since it is related to regional economy development. Hence, problems and prospects of the tourism industry development more and more attract researchers’ and public attention. The article revealed the problems of mass tourism formation in Western and Eastern Siberia regions through exposing forms and directions of tourism industry development in those regions in 1960s–1970s. The problem of tourism in certain Siberian regions is considered by the researches in their works, some aspects of tourism development in Siberian regions are touched on many conferences, devoted to the problems of tourism development in various Russian regions. This gives the right to claim that the aspect of reconstructing forms and directions of regional tourism development in Siberia is discovered insufficiently. Therefore, the author addresses primary sources, namely, archive documentation. The main base draws up previously unpublished archival sources. Materials of the State Archive Fund of Novosibirsk and Kemerovo oblasts contain information about the volume of transportation showing mass tourism development in the given period. Materials from the Russian Federation State Archive contain statistical data on travel volumes and the number of tourists in the analyzed period. Experience in the tourism industry development in Siberian region would help to reveal the preconditions and to present the trend of mass tourism development in the country during this period. The change to a five-day working week with 2 days off prompted the demand for recreation, which was increasing among the soviet population. Along with the expansion of organized tourist trips, the mass initiative tourist movement was getting the increasing popularity. The different forms of initiative tourism worked: trips “Auto stop”, alpinist tours, walking local and regional tours, week-end trips, etc. By the end of the 1960s, tourism was converted into a single-union system demanding comprehensive centralized management with material and technical base, established only on the basis of a unified system approach. Central Tourism Department put the plans that have been successfully carried out by regional councils on tourism, implementing the decisions of the Central Committee of the Party and the decisions of the Soviet Government. | 5415 | Introduction. This paper aims to present the perception of Nikolai Erdman and his plays in the former Czechoslovakia and the modern Czech Republic. The article primarily focuses on the interpretation of Erdman’s plays in Czech translations and on Czech stages. Materials and methods. The research was based on the study of archival sources, such as programs for theatre productions, recordings of performances, critical responses in periodicals, translators’ diaries and memoirs, as well as post-1989 publications on the small theatre movement, etc. Theatre productions and their reception by the public and professional critics were analysed. The materials were also subjected to translational analysis. Results and discussion. Erdman’s satirical comedy The Suicide has been translated into Czech twice by renowned Czech translators Jan Zábrana (1967) and Alena Morávková (1985). In 1971, The Mandate was staged at the satirical theatre Večerní Brno (Evening Brno), which was the first production of Erdman’s plays in the former Czechoslovakia. The Suicide was staged in 1987. The publication of the Czech translation of The Suicide created by Alena Morávková in 1985 was three years ahead of the Soviet publication of the original play. The paper also reflects significant productions of Erdman’s plays at the E. F. Burian Theatre or Studio Ypsilon. Modern Czech stage productions of The Mandate (last performed in 2009) and, first of all, The Suicide (last performed in 2019) are also reflected in the paper. Conclusion. An analysis of the plays’ translations and stage versions proves that even eighty years after their creation, the satirical works of Nikolai Erdman are still relevant thanks to their deep humanistic and philosophical content that resonates with the modern audience. Both before and after 1989, Erdman’s plays were staged in so-called small (studio) theatres. Even today, the interest to Erdman’s plays arises in small theatres, student companies and amateur theatres. However, the themes that Czech directors emphasize in their contemporary productions are fundamentally different from what was targeted before the Velvet revolution. | 5416 | Introduction. The article focuses on the ways scientists express expert evaluation in German academic linguistic reviews. It contributes to the socio-communicative research on evaluation in academic communicative settings. Aim. The aim of the article is to reveal the most frequent strategies of implicit expert evaluation in German linguistic reviews. Material and methods. The materials of the study are 25 reviews published in 2016–2017 in field-specific academic journals: “Zeitschrift für Angewandte Linguistik”, “Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft” and “Zeitschrift für Rezensionen”. Qualitative (contextual semantic, functional pragmatic) and quantitative analysis of the German linguistic reviews provides a set of strategies used to covertly evaluate the papers reviewed. Results and discussion. We consider the expert evaluation as a specific communicative / discursive sub-type of linguistic evaluation marked by modifications of the general logical structure in terms of “subject – object – predicate of evaluation”. Adding the recipient of evaluation we obtain following structure: the subject and the recipient of expert evaluation are scientific discourse actors, the object is represented by formal and content-related aspects of the books reviewed and the predicate of expert evaluation are criteria of scientificity, norms, values and standards of communication shared by all members of the current scientific community. Our data analysis results support our hypothesis and demonstrate that it is possible to make an implicit evaluation of different polarity following the various implication strategies. Beside of well-known strategies used to express evaluation covertly in academic book reviews the article describes also new strategies, not yet mentioned in similar and related works: implicit evaluation through disagreement with the author’s viewpoint, implicit evaluation through recommendation to the review’s recipient and implicit evaluation through (in)direct question. Quantitative measures illustrate different frequencies of negative and positive implicit evaluation and lead to conclusion the explicit evaluation prevail among all types of evaluation whereas the negative implicit evaluation prevail among all tokens of implicit evaluation in our data. | 5436 | The problem of linguistic variability remains acute due to the dynamism of national language development. The study of phraseological units of biblical etymology in the aspect of their variability has recently become increasingly significant, as the fact of wide use of phraseological units derived from biblical texts and stories in various types of discourse is noted. The diversity of variants of biblical phrases requires identifying, organising and structuring the types of their variation. The aim of the research is to identify new variants of biblical phraseological units that are widely used in various discourse types (fiction, media, publicistic, historical, political). Contexts that verify the resulting data of the research were borrowed from the British National Corpus (BNC), News on the Web (NOW) and electronic dictionary Reverso Context (RC). Language material for the research was extracted out of 3 phraseological dictionaries: 1) the bilingual “English-Russian phraseological dictionary” by Alexander V. Kunin, 2) “English-German-Swedish Dictionary of Biblical Phraseology” by Tatyana N. Fedulenkova and others, 3) the multilingual phraseological dictionary “The Mite of Biblical Wisdom” by Zoya K. Adamia and others. The research methods, namely the method of the phraseological identification, the method of the structural and componential analysis, the method of the quantitative analysis and the method of contextual analysis, allow to analyse 350 phraseological units of biblical origin that are actively used in modern English and identify a set of variants that include both usual and occasional simple variants, i.e. lexical and grammatical, quantitative variants of phraseological units and mixed or complex variants of phraseological units. It was found out that along with linguistic variation, phraseological variation is the result of the natural development of language as a system. Variation of biblical phraseological units is not equaled to phraseological synonymy. The analysis of selected biblical phraseological units allowed us to identify the following types of variants: simple variants and complex variants (e.g. substantive-quantitative variants, adjectival-quantitative variants, verbal-quantitative variants) of phraseological units. Within each of the given groups, a division into usual and occasional variants is made. Simple variants are represented by lexical variants (including substantive variants, prepositional variants, prepositional-substantive variants, attributive variants, verbal variants); grammatical variants (including morphological variants and morpho-syntactical variants); quantitative variants (with truncation and addition of components). Truncated parts of a phraseological unit may be represented by three types (truncation of the initial part of the phraseological unit; truncation of the final part of the phraseological unit; mixed truncation). A group of quantitative comparative variants is distinguished, in which the first conjunction (as) as a result of regular truncation becomes optional, resulting in quantitative-variative pairs. A type of mixed variation has been identified, implying the origin of variants by multiple modifications. Substantive-quantitative variants are formed by changing the substantive component together with varying the structure of the phraseological unit by expanding it with a variable component with a preposition. Adjectival-quantitative variants are formed as the result quantitative variation (expansion of the structure of the phraseological unit) coupled with the replacement of the adjectival element. With the help of corpus data, the preference of native speakers for some variants of idioms over others was successfully revealed. The conclusion is made that the studied phraseological units borrowed from the Bible are not static, but are ‘living’, constantly changing language units, widely used in modern English speech. Moreover, both simple and complex variation in the component composition of a given phraseological unit has no significant impact on the invariant meaning of the phraseological unit.
