Introduction. The dialogue of Russian and Western European literature, translations of foreign texts and their assimilation in the host culture, the creation of national world images – all these issues are relevant in modern literary criticism, translation studies, and country studies. The aesthetic principles of S. Ya. Marshak in translating the poetry and prose of the Italian writer J. Rodari correspond to his concept of translation-portrait and organically fit into the history of Russian and Italian literature for children in the middle of the 20th century. The purpose of the article is seen in the disclosure of the relationship between the principles of Marshak-translator and their refraction in translations of poetry and prose by J. Rodari, addressed to the child reader. Material and methods. The material of the study is critical articles by S. Ya. Marshak, poems by G. Rodari “What do crafts smell like?”, “Venice” and the prose story-tale “The Adventures of Cipollino”, translated by Z. M. Potapova and edited by S. Ya. Marshak. The work uses receptive and imagological approaches, comparative-typological, comparative-historical and comparative-comparative methods, as well as contextual and content analysis of Rodari’s original works and their Russian counterparts-translations. Results and discussion. There are different types of translations – “address” translation by K. I. Chukovsky, “translation-portrait” and translation-editing by S. Ya. Marshak. In accordance with the poetics of Italian poetry for children and the Italian literary fairy tale, S. Ya. Marshak’s translations of G. Rodari’s poems and the translation-retelling of the story “The Adventures of Cipollino” are analyzed. The folklore origins of Italian children’s literature are revealed, the connection of the fairy tale about the onion boy with the traditions of “commedia dell’arte” and with a fairy tale, the features of the reader’s perception of the child are revealed, the “double” aesthetic position of the author writing for children is comprehended: “adult” consciousness, resurrecting in itself the consciousness and worldview of the child. The translation principles of S. Ya. Marshak-poet and S. Ya. Marshak-prose writer are considered and compared. The role of the works of G. Rodari in the formation of Russian-Italian literary and cultural relationships and in the formation of Russian literature for children is emphasized. Conclusion. The closeness of the translation principles of J. Rodari and S. Ya. Marshak is analyzed, the correlation of the translation strategies of the Russian author with the traditions of Russian translated literature is clarified. The role of S. Ya. Marshak and M. Gorky in the opening of the State Publishing House of Children’s Literature in 1933 is revealed. The circle of writers who laid the foundations of Soviet literature for children in the first half of the 20th century is determined. The connection between the translation principles of S. Ya. Marshak and the concept of modern adaptive translation by G. M. Kruzhkov is revealed. For the completeness of the reception of Russian literature for children, the article by M. I. Methodology of the research is based on the interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of ethnic proverbs and sayings which circulate in a different culture or a different language. The authors provide cross-cultural analysis of Chinese proverbs and the ways of their presentation in the Russian mass media. The pragmatics of citation of a Chinese proverb/saying in the Russian discourse proved to be determined by intelligibility of the proverb/saying to Russian readers. In some cases authentic ethnic imagery of the Chinese proverb/saying is pragmatically preserved. It makes reference to the wisdom of the Chinese ancient civilization more evident, and serves as an effective way of reasoning in a newspaper article. Special attention is drawn to cultural factors influencing the form and the semantics of Chinese proverbs in the Russian discourse. Parables and myths which stand behind almost all Chinese proverbs and sayings are lost in the Russian discourse, and Chinese proverbs are sometimes substituted with a Russian analogue. The authors of the article describe functions and pragmatics of Chinese proverb usage in a new cultural environment. In mass media of the Russian Far East Chinese proverbs realize a wide range of functions, among which the most relevant are informative, argumentative, phatic and appellative functions. Implementation of the above mentioned functions depends on cross-cultural pragmatics.

The paper outlines the relativization strategies employed by Eastern Khanty, an endangered underdescribed Finno-Ugric language spoken in Western Siberia. The notion of subordination employed here is confined mainly to morphosyntactic criteria such as clausal embedding and the use of non-finite verb-forms. The approach involves a synchronic analysis of structural patterns and functional-semantic features of relative clauses in the general functional theoretical framework. These syntactic constructions are also considered diachronically revealing the paratactic character of the Khanty complex sentences. The analysis is based on the Khanty narrative corpus, reference-grammars and dictionaries. The paper includes the analysis of morphosyntactic structures coding relative relations and other cases having different morphosyntactic manifestations, but the same underlying cognitive structure.

Pletneva L.M. WHETSTONES OF THE EARLY IRON AGE FROM TWO MUSEUMS. Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2017. Issue 9 (186). P. 66-77

The author of the paper collected information about 60 whetstones originating from monuments of Early Iron Age cultures in the Southern Urals, Western Siberia, Altai, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Southern Siberia. For the first time, based on the collected materials, a classification scheme of whetstones was developed on the basis of such attributes as shapes of face and back sides, section (only for Group 4), top and bottom designs of whetstones. Four groups with subgroups and variants were singled out. Whetstones from the Tomsk Ob Region and the Khakas-Minusinsk Basin stored in two museums (Museum of Siberian Archaeology and Ethnography, Tomsk State University, and the Seversk Museum) were introduced in this scheme. The occurrence of specific shapes of whetstones in archaeological cultures of the Southern Urals, Western Siberia, Altai, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Southern Siberia was analyzed. It was revealed that whetstones of Group 1 were most common. Trapezoidal and oval whetstones occur frequently as well. Rod-shaped whetstones are the least frequent. The latter ones, along with whetstones of the second subgroup of Group 1, have better shapes and are carefully polished. Some whetstones were examined using an electron microscope in order to ascertain whether they had been used as household articles and touchstones. The results of the examination were negative. In terms of purpose, whetstones originating from graves were most likely to be used as objects of worship / prestige value.

On the background studies of the Russian language in Eastern countries and Russian-Chinese frontier, discusses the history of the issue. The author proves the uniqueness as compared to the historically previous and compared to other contemporary bilingual (e.g. English-Russian), the situation of interaction between Russian and Chinese cultures in the discourse of virtual Russian Diaspora. The expats have no plans for assimilation in new community and the situation of a balanced linguistic partnerships between typologically radically different languages with approximately equal reputational status determine the specifics and dynamics of the reception of the Chinese language and culture. Chinese ksenonims in laowai substandart have a dual functionality. On the one hand, they, being jargon lexical substrate, perform all inherent in the jargon vocabulary of functions: identification, password, evaluative, expressive, creative. On the other hand, being other cultures lexical substrate, they are the main guides to the world of language, which has secondary cultural orientation, language, turned into the area of foreign language culture. A comprehensive analysis of the language network communication of Russian expats in China has great potential from the perspective of Internet linguistics and discourse studies, contact and comparative linguistics, cultural linguistics and intercultural communication, studies of the Russian language abroad and jargon studies.

Akbayeva F.N. CONTEXTUAL SYNONYMY IN CONCEPTUALIZATION AND LANGUAGE ACTUALIZATION PROCESSES (STUDY OF FOOTBALL NOMINATIONS). Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2019. Issue 4 (201). P. 57-65

Introduction. In this article on the example of football discourse texts, we look at the role of contextual synonymy in processes of conceptualization and language actualization. We analyze plurality of nominations at the intersection of theory of nomination, cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, semantics and lexicology. The purpose of the study is to identify the role of contextual synonyms (CC) in the actualization and conceptualization of football concepts, with the COP being the main source of diversity in football nominations. Material and methods. Context in its broad meaning as a situation of communication, as well as in its narrow understanding as immediate surroundings of a word, largely determines the choice of lexical units and their semantics. Therefore, it makes it impossible to study plurality of nominations outside of context without overlooking or misrepresenting some significant information. That is why in this article we use the method of contextual-semantic analysis of nominations. Results and discussion. Language nominations show the way the author of an utterance conceptualizes a certain notion. These lexical variants in their turn, being «voiced» to the recipient, cause certain changes in the structure of recipient’s concepts, enriching them with new ideas, associations and connotations. Contextual synonyms serve as the main source of plurality of nominations, hence play an important part in language actualization of concepts and conceptualization itself. Applying contextual-semantic analysis to football nominations we discovered the following contextual synonyms of popular football concepts: to score (a goal) – to head (in/home), to fire, to net, to complete, to turn (home), to force, to slot, to slam, to smash, to shoot, to finish); a goal – home, the bottom corner, the net, the side netting, target; a goal (as a score/point) – an opener, the equalizer, the winner, a brace, a second, a finish, a stunner, a triumph, a free-kick, an effort; football/ball – danger, diamond, fruit. The variety of lexical actualizations is an indication of semantic richness of conceptualized units, and their importance to communicants. Culture and language specific features of football concepts represent the prospects of further research.

Beiskhanova S.A., Svich N.A. REVISITING THE DETERMINING LEVELS OF STUDENT LANGUAGE COMPETENCE IN TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY. Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2017. Issue 12 (189). P. 81-84

This article concerns the question of determining levels of language competence in foreign language teaching to students of technical specialties. The paper includes the results and analysis of testing aiming at identifying relevance to one or another knowledge level of a foreign language. The knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, understanding of foreign speech based on reading is checked with the help of placement test. The assessment of basic knowledge by means of input testing reveals the correspondence of knowledge, habits and skills of students to one or another level of knowledge of a foreign language. In its turn, the subsequent language competence in the university, which orients future specialists to self-development and intercultural communication, depends on the results of testing. The main goal of the level approach in foreign language teaching is the striving to provide conditions that allow students to make progress at the level identified by the results of placement test. The experience shows that applying this approach to students in teaching allows to develop habits and skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing at the appropriate level in order to achieve the next level of mastering a foreign language successfully.
