| 1756 | Introduction. At the present stage of the development of linguistics as a science, no common criteria have been developed that would be applicable to all the languages in order to distinguish the periods of their historical development. This is due to the significant differences between literary languages at all, as well as the lack of a common opinion of researchers on this issue. The development of a certain periodization is intended to regulate the accumulated theoretical knowledge of the changes that occurred at different stages of the formation of a literary language. English literary language has the status of a language of international communication and is heterogeneous in its nature. In its vocabulary there are layers of borrowings from many other languages. The borrowing process, in turn, is ambiguous, and also needs a detailed description. Speaking about the layer of Chinese borrowings in the system of the English language, it should be noted that this structural part of the language system has its peculiar features determined by fundamental sociocultural differences between the European countries as a whole and the countries of Asia. The peculiarities of Chinese borrowings are closely connected with the evolution of the recipient language, therefore it is important to consider the periodization of the borrowing process in the context of the two cultures’ interaction. The aim of the paper is to suggest a certain periodization of the borrowing process of lexical units of Chinese origin in the system of the English literary language, taking into account the system and historical parameters of this borrowing layer. Material and methods. The borrowing process is the result of the interaction of languages over a definite period of time. Today, the number of languages that are not affected by foreign influence is minimal. On this basis, borrowing process seems to be one of the inherent phenomena peculiar to the language system at various points of its historical development. The evolution of the language, in turn, is determined by both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The latter are the socio-cultural basis, which, in many respects, determines the linguistic side of the changes occurring in the language in different time intervals. By its nature, language is a social phenomenon; therefore, the description of its system requires an approach that is able to fully reflect the characteristic features of the various stages, which also includes an understanding of the cultural and historical environment of language functioning. Results and discussion. The existing periodization of the English literary language is considered. The correlation between the temporal division of the language history into stages and the language situation typical for each of them is revealed. The criteria for distinguishing periods in the process of borrowing lexical units of Chinese origin in the system of the English literary language have been developed: 1. language situation, 2. type of borrowing, 3. diversity of intermediate languages, 4. equivalence. Based on these criteria, the periodization of the borrowing process of lexical units from Chinese is proposed: Chinese borrowings of the Early period (XVII-XVIII centuries), Chinese borrowings of the Middle period (XIX century up to 1978) and Chinese borrowings of the Modern period (1978 – present time). Within the three periods listed above, the scientific novelty is represented by the development of a new set of criteria determining the periodization of the borrowing process for lexical units of Chinese origin. The description of borrowings in the system of the English literary language in the role of a recipient language is given considering the language situation as a significant factor for the development along with the traditionally accepted temporal criterion. Conclusion. The developed periodization allows structuring the layer of borrowed lexical units of Chinese origin in accordance with the peculiarities of the English literary language (recipient language) at different stages of its historical development. Taking the sociocultural factor into account contributes to creating a more complete picture of the language system evolution. The materials of the current research have both theoretical and practical value and can be applied to developing university courses and teaching such disciplines as English grammar, phonetics, stylistics, lexicology, sociolinguistics, history of English, intercultural communication, also in teaching theory and practice of translation. | 1765 | The article presents the first experience of scientific interpretation of the poem “Monument” by Russian literary figure of the first half of the XX century Boris Aleksandrovich Sadovskoy (1881–1952). This work, being a part of the last created poetic book of B. A. Sadovskoy “Abode of Death” (1917), is analyzed in the context of the genre tradition of the poem “Monument”, which began with the world literature Horace’s ode “To Melpomene”. It is reported that the latest author reinterprets polemically thematic and stylistic elements typical of the mentioned tradition (ekphrasis, the motives of the immortality of poetry and fame of the poet in the memory of future generations, the “national geography” theme of distribution poetic glory), reflected in the translation and poetic setting of Horace’s odes by M. V. Lomonosov, G. R. Derzhavin, A. A. Fet, G. S. Baten'kov. Special attention is paid to polemic dialogue between Sadovskoy’s “Monument” and a poem by A. S. Pushkin “I have erected a monument for myself...”, which largely determines the structure and meaning of the work of the newest poet. The conclusion is that the B. A. Sadovskoy’s work preserving the main features of the genre traditions of the poem “Monument”: thematic and stylistic elements of epitaph (antapite), ekphrasis, poems-wills, “the last poem” has undoubted potential to rethink this tradition which appear in the poetic practice of later authors (V. Mayakovsky, V. Hodasevich, I. Brodsky, Vladimir Vysotsky, V. Shenderovich and others) in three modes of the attitude to it – polemical, ironic and gaming. | 1766 | The article deals with the modelling of pilot falling from a height of 6 000 meters in water. It is shown that the use of computer algebra system (CAS) Maxima qualitatively improves the consideration of the topic “Freefall considering environmental resistance”, traditionally studied in the discipline “Computer simulation”. Maxima has found the general solution of the nonlinear differential equation and found a partial solution with zero initial conditions – the Cauchy problem. CAS Maxima has found the analytical expression for the rate of fall and height fallen down as the functions of time. CAS Maxima has obtained the asymptotic behavior of the rate of fall in the time and has calculated the rate limit of fall. CAS Maxima calculated numerically intermediate values of fall speed and height fallen down for the 15 time values in the range of 1–15 in increments of 1. These values are compared with analogical values calculated by numerical method in book, with the standard deviation for rate is equal 2 %. | 1768 | The article points to research of language representation of a media communicative universal – a law of pragmatically and intentionally conditional variety of textual activity in interpretation of informational reason in mass media. Media communicative universal is defined by the author as a law and its realizing principles of textual organization, which reflect informational reason as an element of media communication and meet the criteria for frequency and repetition. Specific character of actualization of textual activity variety in interpretation of informational reason in mass media on the example of media text in the genre of news was revealed. Based on the news materials from the informational portal “Echo of Moscow” on the launch of intercontinental ballistic missile of DPRK on 28-th of November 2017 as an actual informational reason, the following principles concerning realization of such communicative universal were examined: 1) multivariety of world pictures of different native speakers and translators of information; 2) polyphony of dialogically conditional discursive practice connected with informational reason including change of communicative roles, tactics and strategies of subjects in the process of media communication; 3) social self-representation and creative self-actualization of sources and translators of informational reason in mass media. It was determined that in realization of the law of pragmatically and intentionally conditional variety of textual activity in interpretation of informational reason in mass media the connecting elements are repeated key words and markers of events, which became actual informational reason for interpretation in mass media: toponyms, anthroponyms, names of events, temporal vocabulary, dates, different actualization of space category. Variation in news texts is realized on the level of citation; means of subjective modality expression including social estimation; it’s revealed in actualization of sources of information; in degree of its concretization and peculiarities of different aspects of informational reason’s concentration. | 1774 | Introduction. The article considers the image of St. Petersburg in the lyrics of Ivan Elagin, one of the prominent representatives of the second wave of emigration. The objectives of the study are: to trace the development of the image in its evolution, to fix the “common places” of St. Petersburg poetics, at the same time to note the author’s personal contribution to the development of the theme in conditions of emigration. Material and methods. The research methodology involves the interpretation of poetic texts based on theoretical and literary concepts (acmeism, literary tradition, poetry of the diaspora and the metropolis, etc.). Results and discussion. The image of St. Petersburg in the literature of the Russian abroad has repeatedly become the subject of scientific research, but the lyrics of Ivan Elagin have not yet attracted the close attention of literary scholars in interpreting the theme of St. Petersburg from acmeistic positions. We considered a number of his poems as a vivid example of following the precepts of acmeism in conditions of emigration, although the avant-garde element is no less important in the lyrics of Elagin. But in the image of the city on the Neva, the poet deliberately focuses on the poetics of acmeism, as evidenced by numerous allusions and thematic exchanges with senior acmeists – N. Gumilev, A. Akhmatova, O. Mandelstam. Conclusion. The lyrical embodiment of the image of St. Petersburg by Ivan Elagin is dictated by his acmeistic orientation and the desire to write his name in a line of his own poetic acmeist teachers. St. Petersburg of Ivan Elagin actualizes the general settings for the “St. Petersburg text”, but, in addition, demonstrates the emigrant specificity in interpreting the image of Northern Palmyra. The dominant feature of the image is its mortality, striving for “beyond”, the reflection in it of existential longing and nostalgia – the eternal “companions” of the exiled poet. | 1788 | Introduction. In the history of Russian literature for children, the period of 1940s is distinguished by the thorough attention to the image and motif of time by major writers. It becomes, on the one hand, the universal motive and reflects “the style of epoch” (Yuri Mineralov), on the other hand, great writers – Arkady Gaidar, Samuil Marshak, Evgeny Schwarz – present their artistic understanding of the time phenomenon in their individual styles, motives, images, techniques. The “inner form” (Aleksandr Potebnya) of an artistic work, that image of the “image of time” is interesting as a phenomenon. As a result of the comparative analysis, general and peculiar stylistic features, which represent the image of time in individual styles of the specified writers, were revealed. It was important to take works that are close in time of writing and analyse them in a synchronic perspective: all selected works are written in the range of 1941–43. As a result of the comparative analysis, the general ideology of the era reflected in the individual styles of these authors was manifested, that determines the relevance of the presented work. The aim of the study is to compare the plots and systems of images in the context of images and associative traditions of literature for children in 1940es. The novelty of the work lies in the convincing identification of stylistic dominants of the image and motif of time in these works at the level of plot, system of images, a particular technique – a sudden change in the age of the characters. Material and methods. The methodology of the study is based on the works on “inner form” by Aleksandr Potebnya and works on style by Pavel Sakulin, Yury Mineralov. In the definition of biographical time, we follow Valentin Halizev, in determining the motive we follow the work of “Historical poetics” by Aleksandr Veselovsky. Research methods: comparative-typological, historical. The theoretical significance of the work realises in the use of research materials in “Literature for Children”, “Introduction to literary studies” academic courses. The practical significance of the work is implemented in material for seminars for the study of A. P. Gaidar, Marshak and E. L. Schwartz works, and also for “Theoretical basis of the readers’ activities” practical classes on course. Results and discussion. The results of the study lead to the identification of typological convergence of the image and motive of time in the literature for children of the 1940s. However, one can trace the typological variation in individual styles of A. P. Gaidar, S. Ya. Marshak, and E. L. Schwartz. The Gaidar’s image of an old man is an integral part of his customary system of images, and it also plays a key role in the revealing of the image of time. In the works we have reviewed, Gaidar emphasizes the exceptional importance of transferring not just life, but life-building experience from the old to the young. It can be stated that the transfer of such experience motif is the leitmotif in the works of Gaidar (See Timur and His Team and The Hot Rock). On the contrary, the old men in The Tale of Lost Time, a story about Schwartz, are endowed with destructive evil magic power that can only resist the team of schoolchildren living in reality and, what is most important, catching up with their time. In the dramatic tale The Twelve Months by S. Marshak, the Princess’s individualistic attempt to control and speed up time is exposed not only negatively, but at the same time it looks pointedly senseless and absurd. Conclusion. In the reviewed works the motif and image of time are disclosed in the combination of art and didactics, what is considered traditional feature for literature for children. The stylistic convergence of the works by E. Schwartz and A. Gaidar is embodied in the plot-forming role of biographical time. The key stages, such as childhood and senility, reflect the symbolic plan of the beginning and the end of life. The change of epochs and generations, the transfer of social experience, major events in the life of society and individuals reveal the inextricable link between historical, social and creative levels. | 1789 | Introduction. In the modern novel “The Senility of Vladimir P” a typical image of a “small man” is created and the myth of Russia as a multi-layered system of stereotypes recognizable by the Western recipient is constructed. The purpose of the study is to characterize the stereotypical image of the Russian “small man” in the modern British novel and to determine its functions in the meta-myth of Russia. Material and methods. The methodology of comparative studies, in particular, imagology is used as its the interdisciplinary nature allows one to study the image of the “Other” in the social, cultural and literary consciousness of another country at intertextual, contextual and textual levels upon the concept of stereotypes (according to J. Leerssen). “The Senility of Vladimir P” by M. Honig is a material for research. Results and discussion. Under a scandalous headline, the author offers us a story about life in Russia through the prism of the theme of “small man”. The main character, Nikolay Sheremetyev, is not inclined to reflection until the situation of loss appears and his beloved nephew is arrested. From this moment on, the narrative is gaining momentum, the main character is changing: reality acquires more and more grotesque features, and reader witnesses painful transformation of Sheremetyev, the “small man”, the last honest person in Russia, who makes a deal with his conscience and begins to act within the framework of English-Saxon tradition. The image of the “Other” is presented by Honig precisely from the perspective of the Anglo-Saxon tradition in which all the other characters are actually written out: Russians only by entourage and consistent with the Western stereotype, but infected with Western individualism. The characters of the novel are classified by type depending on the model of behavior and prototype. Conclusion. M. Honig builds a grotesque, absurd image of Russia in the middle of the XXI century. Ethnotype characters act in conditional situations without author pretending to psychologize the image and reveal characters, because they must create the most complete, comprehensive picture of Russian reality, reflect Russian national features as they fit into the British myth of Russia that is familiar to the British. Honig constructs the ethnotype of Russian citizens of the mid-XXIst century from 1) the image of a small man (Nikolai Sheremetyev), traditional for Russian literature; 2) the media image of Russian elite formed mainly by Western media and Russian liberal media; 3) an exaggerated and schematic image of a typical Russian, featured in Western cinema of the late twentieth century. Before us there is a conflict not only of different attitudes, but the opposition of the Russian and English (more broadly Anglo- Saxon) worlds at the cultural and civilizational level. Honig’s novel is an example of secondary actualization, when a fiction text constructed under the influence of the media begins to be perceived as a non-fiction model, becoming a kind of simulacrum of reality.
