| 1801 | Introduction. At the present stage of the development of linguistics as a science, no common criteria have been developed that would be applicable to all the languages in order to distinguish the periods of their historical development. This is due to the significant differences between literary languages at all, as well as the lack of a common opinion of researchers on this issue. The development of a certain periodization is intended to regulate the accumulated theoretical knowledge of the changes that occurred at different stages of the formation of a literary language. English literary language has the status of a language of international communication and is heterogeneous in its nature. In its vocabulary there are layers of borrowings from many other languages. The borrowing process, in turn, is ambiguous, and also needs a detailed description. Speaking about the layer of Chinese borrowings in the system of the English language, it should be noted that this structural part of the language system has its peculiar features determined by fundamental sociocultural differences between the European countries as a whole and the countries of Asia. The peculiarities of Chinese borrowings are closely connected with the evolution of the recipient language, therefore it is important to consider the periodization of the borrowing process in the context of the two cultures’ interaction. The aim of the paper is to suggest a certain periodization of the borrowing process of lexical units of Chinese origin in the system of the English literary language, taking into account the system and historical parameters of this borrowing layer. Material and methods. The borrowing process is the result of the interaction of languages over a definite period of time. Today, the number of languages that are not affected by foreign influence is minimal. On this basis, borrowing process seems to be one of the inherent phenomena peculiar to the language system at various points of its historical development. The evolution of the language, in turn, is determined by both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The latter are the socio-cultural basis, which, in many respects, determines the linguistic side of the changes occurring in the language in different time intervals. By its nature, language is a social phenomenon; therefore, the description of its system requires an approach that is able to fully reflect the characteristic features of the various stages, which also includes an understanding of the cultural and historical environment of language functioning. Results and discussion. The existing periodization of the English literary language is considered. The correlation between the temporal division of the language history into stages and the language situation typical for each of them is revealed. The criteria for distinguishing periods in the process of borrowing lexical units of Chinese origin in the system of the English literary language have been developed: 1. language situation, 2. type of borrowing, 3. diversity of intermediate languages, 4. equivalence. Based on these criteria, the periodization of the borrowing process of lexical units from Chinese is proposed: Chinese borrowings of the Early period (XVII-XVIII centuries), Chinese borrowings of the Middle period (XIX century up to 1978) and Chinese borrowings of the Modern period (1978 – present time). Within the three periods listed above, the scientific novelty is represented by the development of a new set of criteria determining the periodization of the borrowing process for lexical units of Chinese origin. The description of borrowings in the system of the English literary language in the role of a recipient language is given considering the language situation as a significant factor for the development along with the traditionally accepted temporal criterion. Conclusion. The developed periodization allows structuring the layer of borrowed lexical units of Chinese origin in accordance with the peculiarities of the English literary language (recipient language) at different stages of its historical development. Taking the sociocultural factor into account contributes to creating a more complete picture of the language system evolution. The materials of the current research have both theoretical and practical value and can be applied to developing university courses and teaching such disciplines as English grammar, phonetics, stylistics, lexicology, sociolinguistics, history of English, intercultural communication, also in teaching theory and practice of translation. | 1810 | Introduction. Interest in the phenomenon of N. V. Gogol is now manifested both by the scientific community, as well as by playwrights and readers in Russia and abroad. In this regard, it is relevant to study the translations of Gogol’s works (and, in particular, the translations of the comedy “The Government Inspector”) into English, and especially to study such aspects of it as translation interpretation, which affects the reception of the work meaning by readers/spectators in a foreign cultural environment. Aim. The aim of this work is to identify the possible interpretation which N. V. Gogol’s play “The Government Inspector” received in the first English adapted translation carried out in America. Material and methods. The material of the study is N. V. Gogol’s comedy “The Government Inspector” and its adapted English translation made by Yale University professor Max Solomon Mandell in the early XX century. Translation is considered within the framework of the philological approach, which is mainly concerned with the study of reader’s reception. The possibility of studying from such a perspective is determined by the “double aesthetic code (literary and theatrical), which determines the ontological intermediality of the dramatic text”. In addition, the work uses a comparative method, contextual analysis, as well as content analysis of N. V. Gogol’s comedy “The Government Inspector”. Results and discussion. The translation undergoes formal and semantic transformations that reflect the cultural and social characteristics of America at the beginning of the XX century: the struggle between the “genteel tradition” and realism in the field of literature, the emerging critical attitude to the bourgeois way of life, and the partially preserved reliance on Puritan ideology. The message of the comedy is partially modified in accordance with United States inhabitants’ worldview, as well as due to the creators’ of the adaptation insufficient level of proficiency in the Russian language. The author’s narrative style is not preserved either. Conclusion. Thus, in the American context, N. V. Gogol’s comedy “The Government Inspector” acts as a mirror that reflects the situation in American society at the beginning of the XX century. For this reason, the translation can be considered as preserving the ambivalent understanding of the play implied by Gogol, which is connected both with the satirical and the spiritual meaning. However, this meaning is modified in accordance with the religious beliefs of United States inhabitants, as well as due to the insufficient level of the Russian language knowledge by the creators of the adaptation and their lack of full awareness of Gogol’s work specificity; this, in turn, affected the fact that some of the hidden meanings inherent in the text were not conveyed to the American reader/spectator. In general, the adapted translation is unable to convey the original author’s intention. However, despite this, it could undoubtedly have a chance for a positive reader and audience response: the transformations made did not deprive the play of the universal meanings implied by Gogol, which are relevant in almost any culture. The author pays special attention to the study of language competence in the structure of the foreign communicative competence. The paper presents two components of the language competence: readiness and ability to apply linguistic knowledge (orthographic, phonetic, grammatical and lexical ones) and skills of operating this knowledge in accordance with the spheres, situations and themes of communication intended for learning at the secondary school. The author of the article developed and implemented the «Sound-letter train» evaluative method in order to determine the level formation of above-mentioned knowledge and skills. The article presents the method passport: a detailed description of an application procedure, the necessary tools for implementation, and also the introduction (instruction) for students. It demonstrates one full-text version of the method, which had been implemented in the group of students. While describing the technique, the author points out the variability of time and contingent of people on whom the method may be implemented. The author proposes the topics and ways of modifying the method for students depending on the contingent and the training level. The author comes to the conclusion that the method is a way of assessing the formation of orthographic and phonetic knowledge and skills of operating them in the context of the system-activity approach. This method takes into account the requirements of the federal state educational standard for the growing role of the students’ independence while detecting themselves knowledge gaps, expression by them of self-regulation and self-esteem. | 1824 | Introduction. The appearance of a new specialty “Architectural environment design” in universities made it necessary to systematize the terminological apparatus of this field. The purpose of this article is to create a logical and conceptual model of the terminological field “Interior Design” as a component of the terminological macro field “Architectural environment design”. Material and methods. The material for the study is architectural and design terms (more than 620 categories), taken from the academic and research literature, lexicographical sources, professional Internet communication, electronic journals, websites of design studios and design webstores, data from the National Corpus of the Russian Language. The descriptive and the comparative methods of linguistic research, techniques of modeling, definition and component analysis are used in the paper. Results and discussion. A brief background of the issue and the interpretation of terminological field adopted in the work is presented: “Terminological field is a systemically standardized multi-level classification structure that combines the terms of the sphere of homogeneous professional activity” (L.A. Morozova). The logical-conceptual model of the terminological field “Interior design” is a model construction of a system of interrelated concepts classified around the central concept of the sphere of interior design based on the classification of concepts. In order to identify the boundaries and hierarchical organization of the term system the conceptual (logical-conceptual, thematic) aspect of the analysis of it is mainly associated with the onomasiological approach, and in this case the terminological field is intended to reflect the scope of special use of this field of knowledge. As a result of the analysis of professional texts, the boundaries of the terminological macro field “Architectural environment design”, consisted of the terminological fields “Interior design” and “Open architectural space design”, are determined. The framework of professional vocabulary included in the terminological field “Interior Design” is formed, its definition and systematization are carried out. Conclusion. The multi-level branched hierarchical organization of the terminological field “Interior design”, consisting of two subfields (“Residential interior design” and “Public interior design”) is revealed, the subfields are divided into terminological microfields, thematic groups, thematic subgroups and thematic microgroups (11 term groupings of different levels). Thus, the conceptual model of the terminological field “Interior design”, which is a fragment of the terminological macro field “Architectural environment design”, is constructed. The analysis is based on the theory of figurative language and combines the semasiological and cognitive approaches to the description of figurative language units that implement conceptual metaphorical and metonymic models through the system of their meanings. The motivating names for figurative words and expressions are 52 units including diminutives and word-formation: bottle, fork, spoon, mixer, bowl, knife, pepper, glass, plate, cup, etc. These names motivate 225 figurative lexical and phraseological units: “bochka” (very fat person), “kuvshinka” (waterlily), “kak myska” (about round and convex shape of something), “proyti kak nozh skvoz’ maslo” (easily, without difficulty), etc. Described figurative words and expressions represent metaphorical projection from the source-sphere “Dishes” to the 9 target-spheres (“Person”, “Artifacts”, “Nature facts”, “Social phenomena”, “Space” and others) associated with the figurative characteristic of the physical and non-material world, each of which is described in the article in detail. The greatest number of figurative words and expressions denote the phenomenon of reference to the following areas: “Person” (80 units), “Artifacts” (62 units), “Social phenomena” (46 units), “Nature facts” (16 units). The final part of the article is devoted to the lexicographic description of figurative vocabulary that reflects metaphorization of dishes in the Russian language and includes examples of dictionary entries. The article describes the aspects of the metaphorical interpretation of the concept stone, presented in Russian linguistic culture and the system of figurative means of the Russian language. The relevance of the research is due to the scientific interest in the study of the metaphorical functioning of concepts and their figurative language representation in the perspective of the anthropocentric paradigm of linguistics. The aim of the work is to describe the metaphorization of various qualities and properties of a stone for the figurative description of objects of the surrounding reality and the inner world of a person, expressed in the semantics of language units and speech statements. Material and methods. The methodology of the work is based on cognitive, linguistic, cultural and system-structural approaches to the study of the figurative language and speech. The methods of structural-semantic, conceptual and contextual analysis, as well as field modeling and cultural linguistic commentary are used. Empirical material is represented by figurative words and expressions (about 200 units), as well as contexts that demonstrate their metaphorical functioning (about 850 contexts). The sources were the published explanatory and phraseological dictionaries of the modern Russian language and the text base of the National Corps of the Russian language. Results and discussion. As a result, the qualities and properties of the concept being studied were described, which served as the basis for metaphorical projections on figuratively named objects and situations; the lexical and phraseological field of the Russian language is characterized, represented by words and expressions, metaphorically motivated names with the semantics ‘stone’; cognitive models are revealed for which the Stone conceptual sphere is the initial one and serves as a source of the metaphorical characteristics of the phenomena of other conceptual target spheres. The concept of stone in its metaphorical functioning actualizes the following basic features: hardness, strength, heaviness, immobility, color. These qualities of a stone are metaphorically projected onto the properties of various material and non-material objects: objects (hard, lost softness), the human body (heavy, immovable), psychological states of a person (grief, anxiety, depression, torpor), moral qualities (indifference, willpower, responsiveness), mental and social activities (meaningful content, the beginning of activities). Conclusion. The obtained results demonstrate cognitively and axiologically significant fragment of the Russian language world view. The corpus research data testify active metaphoric functioning of the Stone concept in modern discursive practices. | 1841 | The rapidly changing social reality which researchers characterize as a situation of social uncertainty, determines the challenges, problems and opportunities of the youth’s living space. The lack of clear guidelines for the future, the reassessment of the values of the older generation, serious functional changes in the family institution, the increasing influence of the mass information media and the Internet space, actualize the need for targeted educational interaction of social institutions with young people. In the work on the basis of historical and pedagogical analysis, the concept of “modern youth” is specified, and a description of the content of this concept in changing social reality is proposed. The article describes the situation of uncertainty as an opportunity for the development and actualization of the social potential of young people, the manifestation of an active and responsible position of a young person in various interrelated living spatial circumstances. Three groups of problems that define the living space of younger generation and are formed in the situation of uncertainty are presented: the organization of the educational space of educational organizations that promotes the realization of the potential of the young man as a subject of his own life; use of the opportunities of society and its transformation into an educational space; effective interaction of social institutions in the education of youth.
