| 1651 | Introduction. Interest in the phenomenon of N. V. Gogol is now manifested both by the scientific community, as well as by playwrights and readers in Russia and abroad. In this regard, it is relevant to study the translations of Gogol’s works (and, in particular, the translations of the comedy “The Government Inspector”) into English, and especially to study such aspects of it as translation interpretation, which affects the reception of the work meaning by readers/spectators in a foreign cultural environment. Aim. The aim of this work is to identify the possible interpretation which N. V. Gogol’s play “The Government Inspector” received in the first English adapted translation carried out in America. Material and methods. The material of the study is N. V. Gogol’s comedy “The Government Inspector” and its adapted English translation made by Yale University professor Max Solomon Mandell in the early XX century. Translation is considered within the framework of the philological approach, which is mainly concerned with the study of reader’s reception. The possibility of studying from such a perspective is determined by the “double aesthetic code (literary and theatrical), which determines the ontological intermediality of the dramatic text”. In addition, the work uses a comparative method, contextual analysis, as well as content analysis of N. V. Gogol’s comedy “The Government Inspector”. Results and discussion. The translation undergoes formal and semantic transformations that reflect the cultural and social characteristics of America at the beginning of the XX century: the struggle between the “genteel tradition” and realism in the field of literature, the emerging critical attitude to the bourgeois way of life, and the partially preserved reliance on Puritan ideology. The message of the comedy is partially modified in accordance with United States inhabitants’ worldview, as well as due to the creators’ of the adaptation insufficient level of proficiency in the Russian language. The author’s narrative style is not preserved either. Conclusion. Thus, in the American context, N. V. Gogol’s comedy “The Government Inspector” acts as a mirror that reflects the situation in American society at the beginning of the XX century. For this reason, the translation can be considered as preserving the ambivalent understanding of the play implied by Gogol, which is connected both with the satirical and the spiritual meaning. However, this meaning is modified in accordance with the religious beliefs of United States inhabitants, as well as due to the insufficient level of the Russian language knowledge by the creators of the adaptation and their lack of full awareness of Gogol’s work specificity; this, in turn, affected the fact that some of the hidden meanings inherent in the text were not conveyed to the American reader/spectator. In general, the adapted translation is unable to convey the original author’s intention. However, despite this, it could undoubtedly have a chance for a positive reader and audience response: the transformations made did not deprive the play of the universal meanings implied by Gogol, which are relevant in almost any culture. | 1665 | The article deals with the concept “Lexical structure of a text” as one of the major notions in functional lexicology and communicative stylistics. In connection with the fact that the basic element of any piece of art is a word, the fundamental element in research of creation of a specific author is identification of peculiarities of the lexical structure of his poetic texts. The analysis made by the author of the article makes it possible to compare the features of the lexical structure of the texts with different creative periods of the author and to identify a certain dynamics. In order to carry out the analysis of the lexical structures of O. E. Mandelstam’s poetic texts based on the periodization of the poet’s work offered by M. L. Gasparov, three most typical, written at different times poems were chosen: relating to the period of early creation “More tender than tender”/ ”Nezhneye nezhnogo” (1909), to the period “Tristia” “The light Moscow rain”/ ”Moskovskiy dozhdik” (1922), to the period of the thirties of the twentieth century “We live with no sense of the country”/” My zhivem, pod soboyu ne chuya strany” (1933). | 1679 | Introduction. In the modern novel “The Senility of Vladimir P” a typical image of a “small man” is created and the myth of Russia as a multi-layered system of stereotypes recognizable by the Western recipient is constructed. The purpose of the study is to characterize the stereotypical image of the Russian “small man” in the modern British novel and to determine its functions in the meta-myth of Russia. Material and methods. The methodology of comparative studies, in particular, imagology is used as its the interdisciplinary nature allows one to study the image of the “Other” in the social, cultural and literary consciousness of another country at intertextual, contextual and textual levels upon the concept of stereotypes (according to J. Leerssen). “The Senility of Vladimir P” by M. Honig is a material for research. Results and discussion. Under a scandalous headline, the author offers us a story about life in Russia through the prism of the theme of “small man”. The main character, Nikolay Sheremetyev, is not inclined to reflection until the situation of loss appears and his beloved nephew is arrested. From this moment on, the narrative is gaining momentum, the main character is changing: reality acquires more and more grotesque features, and reader witnesses painful transformation of Sheremetyev, the “small man”, the last honest person in Russia, who makes a deal with his conscience and begins to act within the framework of English-Saxon tradition. The image of the “Other” is presented by Honig precisely from the perspective of the Anglo-Saxon tradition in which all the other characters are actually written out: Russians only by entourage and consistent with the Western stereotype, but infected with Western individualism. The characters of the novel are classified by type depending on the model of behavior and prototype. Conclusion. M. Honig builds a grotesque, absurd image of Russia in the middle of the XXI century. Ethnotype characters act in conditional situations without author pretending to psychologize the image and reveal characters, because they must create the most complete, comprehensive picture of Russian reality, reflect Russian national features as they fit into the British myth of Russia that is familiar to the British. Honig constructs the ethnotype of Russian citizens of the mid-XXIst century from 1) the image of a small man (Nikolai Sheremetyev), traditional for Russian literature; 2) the media image of Russian elite formed mainly by Western media and Russian liberal media; 3) an exaggerated and schematic image of a typical Russian, featured in Western cinema of the late twentieth century. Before us there is a conflict not only of different attitudes, but the opposition of the Russian and English (more broadly Anglo- Saxon) worlds at the cultural and civilizational level. Honig’s novel is an example of secondary actualization, when a fiction text constructed under the influence of the media begins to be perceived as a non-fiction model, becoming a kind of simulacrum of reality. | 1695 | Introduction. The article considers the image of St. Petersburg in the lyrics of Ivan Elagin, one of the prominent representatives of the second wave of emigration. The objectives of the study are: to trace the development of the image in its evolution, to fix the “common places” of St. Petersburg poetics, at the same time to note the author’s personal contribution to the development of the theme in conditions of emigration. Material and methods. The research methodology involves the interpretation of poetic texts based on theoretical and literary concepts (acmeism, literary tradition, poetry of the diaspora and the metropolis, etc.). Results and discussion. The image of St. Petersburg in the literature of the Russian abroad has repeatedly become the subject of scientific research, but the lyrics of Ivan Elagin have not yet attracted the close attention of literary scholars in interpreting the theme of St. Petersburg from acmeistic positions. We considered a number of his poems as a vivid example of following the precepts of acmeism in conditions of emigration, although the avant-garde element is no less important in the lyrics of Elagin. But in the image of the city on the Neva, the poet deliberately focuses on the poetics of acmeism, as evidenced by numerous allusions and thematic exchanges with senior acmeists – N. Gumilev, A. Akhmatova, O. Mandelstam. Conclusion. The lyrical embodiment of the image of St. Petersburg by Ivan Elagin is dictated by his acmeistic orientation and the desire to write his name in a line of his own poetic acmeist teachers. St. Petersburg of Ivan Elagin actualizes the general settings for the “St. Petersburg text”, but, in addition, demonstrates the emigrant specificity in interpreting the image of Northern Palmyra. The dominant feature of the image is its mortality, striving for “beyond”, the reflection in it of existential longing and nostalgia – the eternal “companions” of the exiled poet. The source of factual material is the albums of the rock group “Melnitsa” of different years. Empirical base of research is a result of usage of continuous sampling technique. During the study the author of the article the descriptive method and method of contextual analysis. Results and discussion. In the analysed texts N. A. O’Shea uses precedent phenomena of different types. The precedent names are frequency. They represent proper nouns of mythological creature (Scandinavian deity Odin), historical persons (warlord Tamerlane, musicians Freddy Mercury and Elvis Presley, writer and pilot A. de Saint-Exupéry) and literary characters (Tristan and Isolde). Such factors as a theme of the compositions or concept of the song or album, author`s interest in certain personality and respect for one’s dictate appeal to one or another precedent phenomenon. Precedent statements are the parts of cultural experience of poetess, she organically incorporates quotes from different sources (in their original form or transformed) in the song texts, makes them work for implementation of author`s idea. Precedent texts are the basis for creation of author`s legend. Some precedent titles induce particular associations by listeners; give cultural significance to the compositions. Conclusion. Precedent phenomena have two main functions in the song texts authorship of N. A. O’Shea: a function of creation of text modeling and meaning-forming function. | 1697 | Introduction. Currently, in the context of the progression of globalization and informatization trends, one-off and terminative education does not always meet the requirements of society and the state for the quality of teaching staff. As part of the popularization of the educational ideology “lifelong learning”, integration in teacher education and professional development of teachers has become one of the leading goals of education reform in many countries. For a long time, the traditional separation in the system of chinese teacher education and the process of professional development of teachers did not allow improving the quality of the teaching staff. In this regard, in China at the end of the XX century research began on the problems of integration in this education and development. Since that time, considerable experience has been accumulated here in the integration of teacher education, both at a theoretical and practical level. The aim of the study is to determine the essence, characterize the key components and identify existing problems based on the analysis of integration in modern teacher education and professional development of teachers in China. Material and methods. The material of this research was the scientific and pedagogical works of Chinese researchers on the research problem. As methods in this work, we used a theoretical analysis of scientific and pedagogical literature on the problem of research, the experience of implementing integration in teacher education and professional development of teachers; generalization and concretization. Results and discussion. Integration in teacher education and professional development of teachers in China is to rationally design the goals and content of teaching at different stages of professional development of teachers, change the division in this process, optimize the use of educational resources, and promote the quality of teaching staff. The government, higher education institutions, professional retraining organizations for teachers and schools, as important participants in integration, in their own way contribute to its implementation in teacher education and teacher development. This integration is mainly reflected in the integration of learning objectives, curricula, educational institutions involved in teacher training, teacher qualifications and educational resources. Promoting effective professional communication and interaction at all stages of professional development of teachers and between various participants in teacher education, strengthening the continuity of the goals and content of education, improving the quality of teaching staff in the system of professional retraining of teachers remain important tasks of integration in teacher education and professional development of teachers in the future. Conclusion. The essence of integration in teacher education and professional development of teachers in China is to change the divisions in teacher training and to promote the continuous professional development of teachers. Through the integration of goals, curricula, educational institutions, attestation of teacher qualifications and educational resources, the quality of teacher training is indeed improved. However, further development and improvement of integration in teacher education is subject to further deep research in theory and practice in this area, and also requires solving existing problems.
