Kim A.A., Shapovalova Y.Y., Mineev-Li V.E. LINGUOCULTURAL FEATURES OF THE SYMBOLISM OF SOME COLOR DESIGNATIONS AMONG THE BRITISH AND SLAVS. Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2022. Issue 3 (221). P. 34-45

Introduction. The focus of this paper is the observation and comparison of several symbolic connotations of British and Slavic basic color terms. Aim and objectives. The paper’s aim is to discuss cultural and linguistic commonalities and peculiarities of a few color terms and prepare educational resource for different disciplines, such as English, Russian as a foreign language, ethnolinguistic and linguacultural studies. Material and methods. This paper observes British and Slavic idioms with the component ‘color’ in its connotative meaning. A cross-disciplinary approach helps identify the essential place of color terms in interpreting linguistic picture of the world and emphasizes the integrative role of culture. We consolidate with ideas of L. Bloomfield and J. Lyons concerning connotative meaning in linguistic semantics. Results and discussion. Connotative meanings of color terms often become cultural symbols and serve as signs of some abstract concepts. Since color perceptions relate to the sensory sphere, they are easily transferred to the characteristics of emotions, dignity of character, behavior, appearance. Interpretation of color terms in their connotative meanings will provide insight into the national mentality. Connotative meanings reflect individualized situations based on national cultural values and norms of social life. In provided examples the basic meaning of a color term is becomingusually narrower. Conclusion. The comparative analysis of connotations of five color terms leads to following conclusions: 1) color is able to evoke certain emotions traced in languages in the form of idioms containing a color component; 2) differences in the semantic structure of color connotations in English and Russian are due to national and cultural peculiarities; 3) etymology of color terms and historical facts sometimes make it possible to establish the dependence of a symbol on practice; 4) the main (perhaps the most universal) source of color terms are natural objects with a characteristic color.

The objective of the work is to consolidate and summarize the findings of the questionnaire aimed at identifying students and teachers’ attitude towards the educational process transition to electronic format. Material and methods. Research statistics was taken from the questionnaire conducted in the first couple of weeks of online English classes and at the end of 2019–2020 academic year spring term. In order to solve the task the authors applied the following methods: the analysis of methodological literature on technologies introduction into educational process at English language classes, questionnaire given to university students and teachers. Results and discussion. The paper combines and generalizes the replies to the questionnaire about the very first experience of using e-learning environment fully instead of in-class activities for the English language classes at the university. Advantages and drawbacks of a distance education are mentioned as well as the level of educational process participants’ satisfaction with the language teaching quality within a new format. There are also some special aspects of teaching English online shown. It was defined that during these classes students and teachers had faced the major challenge – the lack of a real-life communication with verbal and nonverbal channels of information exchange. One of the undeniable benefits of a distance education when compared to classroom sessions is organizational aspect, especially time saving. Conclusion. Remote format of the English language classes is considered as a high quality alternative to in-class learning in situations when classroom settings are impossible to be organized due to different circumstances (pandemics, weather conditions, etc.). For children with severe speech disorders the corrective-speech process at kindergarten speech therapy center lasts 2–3 years. During this time it is necessary to help children to correct the defects of the entire system of language: aspects of pronunciation, lexical and grammatical side, of coherent speech. The necessity of examination and formation of a stable motivation for corrective speech work is caused by the low level of interest of senior preschool children with severe speech disorders to speech therapy classes, because they require perseverance from the child, and this quality appears later. The authors identified three stages of diagnostics, necessary for a comprehensive examination of children with severe speech disorders. Stage 1 – speech diagnostics, stage 2 – study of children’s motivation, stage 3 – parents’ questioning to identify the child’s interests. The attention is focused on the stage of studying of motivation for speech therapy classes, with the aim of identifying conditions for the formation of stable motivation of children with severe speech disorders.
