| This article is devoted to investigating the images of grain and bread, which happen to be universally shared among agricultural-based cultures, as they are metaphorized by means of verbalized forms in Russian, English and Italian languages. We will present the common cross-cultural substantial context that lies at the basis of figurative reelaboration of source concepts and describe lexico-phraseological units embodying the images of grain and bread as part of motivational-figurative paradigms. An analysis of metaphoric models reflecting projections of these images in various conceptual spheres pertaining the material and non-material world is provided. The linguistic representation of cognitive metaphoric models is realized by means of figurative words and expressions. They include: metaphors (grain ‘very small and round shaped particle’), metaphoric derivatives (breadwinner ‘a person supporting a family with his or her earnings’), phraseological combinations (take the bread out of the mouths ‘deprive someone of his or her livelihood’), proverbs, sayings, and catchphrases (bread and circuses!). Our analysis will show a shared process of metaphorization in the languages under examination. On the one hand, the image of grain serves as a mean of metaphoric representation for 1) small and round shaped objects, 2) small parts of a whole (a structure or a surface), 3) a little or insignificant amount of something; 4) the source or the central part of something. On the other hand, the image of bread is used metaphorically to indicate 1) means of subsistence, 2) work or its results, 3) prosperity, 4) misery, 5) food in general, 6) positive moral characteristics of an individual. We can observe that in Russian, English, and Italian the figurative and symbolic semantics of grain and bread correspond. Such consistency is due, firstly, to similarities in food preferences among agricultural-based cultures, and, secondly, to the influence of pre-Christian and Christian traditions. 3722 | Beginning with a brief survey of the latest developments in the field of phonosemantics the article looks into psychological basis of sound iconism by investigating the reactions of Russian speakers to English sound-iconic words. The experiment with the use of the Lexical Decision method is described and the results are tabled. The subjects – 90 Russian learners of English at different proficiency levels – were asked to identify as words or non-words stimuli of three types: a) sound-iconic English words, b) non-iconic (neutral) English words and c) quasi-words. All stimuli were presented visually in random sequences in a compressed time frame. The criteria for selecting the stimuli were thoroughly elaborated. The results of the experiment show a statistically veritable delay in identifying the sound-iconic stimuli as words. It remained constant, regardless of the English language proficiency level of the participants. Presumably, the cognitive complexity of the task increased because of a certain interference between the two ways of information processing: abstract-conceptual and sensory-symbolic. This influenced the speed and accuracy of word recognition. Another factor leading to errors might stem from the fact that the sound forms of the English visual stimuli, as they were reproduced by the subjects in their inner speech, did not coincide with their associations in Russian, which made them «think twice» before answering. 3738 | In this article we can see the application of Marxian and Weberian conceptions of estrangement for the description of the conditions of work and education in the USA in the 19th century. If in the Marxian conception the estrangement in capitalistic society increases permanently, then in Weberian conception the estrangement weakens by the increase of qualification and by the reformation labour ethics of “beruf”. However in case of the USA we can see what the estrangement was not weakened owing to reformation labour ethics of “beruf”, but owing to diversification of possibilities. The problem of estrangement is a problem of development of capitalism but it needs its own methodology. 3740 | The article reflects the results of studies of emotional intelligence (EI), coping strategies and behavior patterns of students of secondary school aged 14–15. The highest prevalence is low emotional intelligence – 51.4 % of respondents, and only 6.7 % of students – high. There is the relationship between the components of EI and the patterns of impaired functioning. Low level of empathy increases the likelihood of social problems. The higher is the level of emotional intelligence and its indicators, the lower is the risk of manifestations and problems in emotional and behavioral areas. Highlight the links between the applied coping strategies and components of EI. Students with high and average EI increasingly choose adaptive coping mechanisms, in contrast to the group with low levels of EI, using increasingly less effective strategy. The lower is the level of EI, the less frequently are used coping strategies in a stressful situation, both adaptive and non-adaptive, and consequently, the higher is the risk / manifestations of behavioral and emotional problems. Keywords: emotional intelligence, coping strategies, emotions, patterns of behavior, secondary school students | 984
| The article deals with the impact of Kierkegaard’s ideas on Thornton Wilder’s philosophical novels. Far from being the only major influence, this impact helps to make clear certain ideological points in the writer’s works and cannot be underestimated. After discovering Kierkegaard’s works in his early youth, Thornton Wilder kept returning to them during all his life. As a result, Kierkegaard’s philosophical ideas managed to find their way into most of Wilder’s novels, though the writer didn’t simply illustrate them with his own examples but made them an integral part of his own world, blending them with his own ideas, and entering into some controversy with them in his later works. At different stages of his writing career Wilder gave special attention to different aspects of Kierkegaard’s philosophy. The concept of faith was central to his early books, from The Cabala to Heaven’s My Destination; the concept of freedom became important in his mature works, The Ides of March in particular; while his last novels, The Eighth Day and Theophilus North, developed the idea of creative evolution. 3742 | The article deals with necessity of university complexes establishment which allows to form innovative infrastructure and create educational programs to the needs of the real economy and its science-based, high-technology sector. The phenomenon of the university complex involves establishing creative environment for real innovation process combined with the training of a new generation personnel with innovative skills. Managers, professors, scholars, Ph.D. candidates, students, representatives of companies and project organizations who are included in the environment use innovative thinking in all professional and personal processes. Countries with developed economy prove that advantages of innovation-based development are increasing competitive advantage of national economy and settle social and economic issues. Shows the experience of the university complex establishment in several Siberian regions as a model of interaction between labor market and education market in the processes of labour force reproduction for industry. For universities responding to regional challenges means moving to the role of the active subject of formation and implementation of regional economy, including: formation of regional strategy of socioeconomic development; formation and realization of large investment projects on the basis of private-public partnership; scientific-educational outcomes supply for the region (innovation projects and project teams for their implementation), etc. University, which is developed according to the model of the university complex, responds to the challenges of modern socio-economic development of the region. Therefore the university complex is a vital institutional mechanism which is provided with priorities, objectives, projects and resources. 3743 | The article is devoted to the research of autobiographical miniature stories of the modern writer Angelika Sumbayeva. Classical works (M. Bakhtin, L. Ginzburg etc.) give the ideas of typological signs of poetics of autobiographical prose of the childhood which are observed in A. Sumbayeva’s prose: psychologism, retrospective view, lyrical modality of the narration caused by the attitude of the storyteller towards the hero. At the same time the volume of a miniature causes features of A. Sumbayeva’s prose: laconicism of descriptions, accuracy in selection of details; transfer of psychological state through nuance, details. The article alalyses in detail the cycle of the stories published in 2010 in the magazine for children “A Yellow Caterpillar” and built according to calendar chronology (winter, spring, summer). In miniature stories the features of art space come to light (including, the use of attributive features of the Siberian region, its climatic originality), functions of gesture, nuance, phrases in the transfer of a psychological portrait of characters, narrative techniques which form the author’s attitude towards the autobiographical character (for example, use of the narration in third person, but transfer of attitude of the child associating reality with the fantastic world through the direct speech). In miniatures there is an image of the natural world of Siberia in general, and the autobiographical image appears as typical, given in circumstances, recognizable, familiar to the Siberian reader. Miniatures of Angelica Sumbayeva recreate the world of childhood as a harmonious, open to the new, capable to take a miracle to transform the ordinary into the world of fairy tales. Keywords: children’s and youth literature, Siberian writers and poets, A. Sumbaeva, autobiographical prose about childhood | 984
| The article considers the key features of communication as a tool of linguistic manipulation in advertising discourse. The aim of this study is to investigate the technologies of creating perlocutionary effect in American advertising communication. At the stage of the interpretation the vast majority of American advertising works consisting of few words are transformed into informative and pragmatic semiotic texts. Nowadays the US advertising shows a big variety of products with different degrees of verbal congestion. As a part of this study we have found a lot of advertising samples which include the minimum amount of verbal text: only the name brand or trade mark and single-phrase slogan. It should be noted that even the most minimum quantity of speech act expressed by the well-known and popular person lead to the greater intensity and immensity of its significance. Having analyzed the fragments of advertising texts we conclude that the informative congestion of communication is fundamental to its ability to persuade with the only proviso that by congestion we mean not the number of language units but the amount of their information content. The findings of the integrated and comprehensive study of the informative congestion of discourse and text can be used in pragmalinguistics, text linguistics, functional linguistics, theory of intercultural communication. Keywords: advertising discourse, informative congestion, communication, linguistic manipulation, language units | 984
| Now there is a great emphasis on situating metaphor studies within broad, comprehensive models of human cognition, communication, and culture. As any language is anthropocentric, and in any language, there are metaphors that perceive objects, animate or inanimate, as persons. Metaphors ascribing human characteristics to non-human entities are defined anthropomorphic and can be viewed as a formula NATURE IS MAN, where we have NATURE for the target domain, and MAN for the source domain. In literary texts the anthropomorphic metaphor is considered as one of the most productive metaphor type due to the author’s subjective perception of the surrounding world. The ubiquity of the anthropomorphic metaphor demonstrates that the key metaphorical schema NATURE IS MAN can be broken down into lower–level, specific schemas bringing to the various aspects of the concept MAN (appearance, traits of character, feelings, aural perception, intellectual functions, physical activities, age, body etc.) and the concept NATURE (natural objects and phenomena, seasons, times of day etc.). The present paper is aimed at showing generating power of the basic metaphor «SPRING IS A WOMAN» in Shukshin’s writings. The corpus of original metaphorical expressions as the examples for the analysis illustrates the modeling potential of the anthropomorphic metaphor. Created by the culture and embedded in the literary texts by the author it is used to perform, and present new dimensions of the picture of the world. Keywords: anthropomorphic metaphor, basic metaphor, modeling of the world, literary text, spring, woman | 984
| The problem of mortality and the experience of death is one of the most urgent for a person. Each culture offers its own solution. In the Ancient Greece of the era of the classics, mysteries were the means of the lifetime experience of death, among which the most widespread were the Eleusinian sacraments. The emergence of the mystery phenomenon is connected with the specificity of the ancient Greek religion, which was a kind of complement in the form of rituals to existing mythological subjects and never turned into an essential cultural dominant that would determine all spheres of life of ancient Greek society. The Eleusinian Mysteries, which arose on the basis of the agrarian myth of Demeter and Persephone, allowed people to survive death without dying, while still alive, and thus not only include it in the circle of being, but also get hope for a better posthumous fate. In this case, the mysteries are more connected with the myth than with the actual Greek religion. They acted as illustrations to the myth, ritualizing it. The problem of the lifetime experience of death with the help of the Eleusinian Mysteries will allow us to understand better the specifics of the ancient Greek culture of the classical epoch, and the findings can be used in the preparation of courses on the history and culture of ancient Greece.
