| 2310 | Introduction. This article is devoted to the problem of the formation of existential thought in the late works of Tolstoy. The object of the research is one of the most significant categories in the philosophy of existentialism – the category of fear. The research material is based on the novels The Kreutzer Sonata and The Devil; a comparative comparative method and a structural analysis method are used. The purpose of this study is to try to examine the writer’s appeal to the category of existential fear and to determine its functions in the late works of Tolstoy. This goal determined the following tasks: to determine the context for the formation of existential thought in the novels The Kreutzer Sonata and The Devil, to consider the category of existential fear in these works, and also to explain how using this category Tolstoy carries out a dialogue with the reader. The comparative method and the method of structural analysis were used in the work. Results and discussion. In the late period of creativity in the philosophical thought of Tolstoy there is an appeal to existential problematics. At the ideological level, the writer focuses on social conflicts and seeks the origins of social contradictions. In the conflict of relations between the sexes, the origins of the existential crisis of man and society as a whole. It is this period of the Russian classic that can be described as a period of artistic experiments. For example, in the late works of Tolstoy, the category of the reader is formed, and new content takes on new forms. It was during this period that the writer increasingly turned to small epic and dramatic genres. The relevance of the article is determined by the study of the existential problems of the late works of L. N. Tolstoy, separate aspects of the transformation of the creative method of the writer. The novelty lies in the fact that the category of existential fear is regarded as the key to the moral resurrection of the heroes of these stories. Conclusion. The preliminary conclusions are made that the existential category of fear is formed in connection with the social problems of the works, it becomes a way to overcome the moral death of the hero, and also acts as a link between the author and the reader. | 2311 | Introduction. The study focuses on news discourse and on its persuasive dimension in particular. News discourse has a number of standard strategies to promote the persuasive process for assertions. If propositions are to be accepted as true or plausible, there must be special means to enhance their appearance of truth and plausibility. Material and methods. The theoretical perspective of the paper is the critical epistemic discourse analysis proposed by T. A. van Dijk. The paper considers mental representation of the event nominated in British and American mass media as RUSSIAN SPY POISONING. Results and discussion. The study highlights the evasion strategy as a form of discourse-based mental influence in news discourse. From a pragmatic approach evasion is viewed as violation of one of the conversational maxims formulated by P. Grice which requires contributions to conversations to be truthful. The author claims that the aim of the evasion strategy in representing news is to discursively emphasize those properties of mental models that are consistent with the interests of the dominant social groups and discursively deemphasize those properties that are inconsistent with their interests. Consequently, evasion strategy results in partial, incomplete or biased understanding of the news story in the interests of a dominant social group. Evasion presupposes formulation of meanings in such a way that they are not merely understood but also accepted as the truth or at least as a possible truth. The article discusses strategic devices of evasion like hedging, referential vagueness, focus shift, selective use of evidential and epistemic markers, half truth. Conclusion. The author comes to the conclusion that evasion strategy contributes to the formation or reactivation of preferred mental models and may thus be used in manipulative discourse use. | 2324 | The article deals with problems of cognitive linguistics. The fundamental concepts comprising world language picture is the centre of attention. The article traces the verbalization of the concept of “bread” in the Russian language, using materials from the academic dictionary that contain some phraseological units with component “bread”, each of which implements one of the main cognitive features of this concept. On the basis of the examples given, it is shown that the degree of phraseologization of these units is different, but nevertheless all of them retain a connection with the original denotate. This circumstance contributes to the preservation of positive connotations in this phraseological paradigm. The analysis of cognitive signs to identify the scope of the concept of “bread” in the language picture of the world of the Russian people is carried out. The question of the original meaning, which forms the main nominative meaning of the word “bread” in Russian, which is present in the semantic structure of all derivatives, regardless of the degree of their distance from the creation of a semantic base, is considered. For the bulk identification of the concepts of “bread” in the linguistic picture of the world of Russian people, an analysis was conducted on the basis of cognitive signs. The fundamental nature of the concept “bread” in a language picture of the world of the Russian people with all evidence is shown at all levels. A complete idea of the scope of this concept can be created only with regard to folklore material. However, the system of the most important cognitive signs is successfully traced on the material of lexical, phraseological and paremiological units. We have been collecting the corresponding materials from dictionaries of V. I. Dal, V. M. Ogoltsev, D. N. Ushakov, M. Fasmer, and the four-volume academic dictionary of Russian (the Small Academic dictionary). The task of cognitive or linguistic-cognitive analysis is to analyze language units, focused on identifying cognitive signs that represent this concept in the structure of a particular character. The research shows that cognitive characteristics realized by the concept “bread” embrace the image of bread in the national thinking of Russian nation. | 2325 | Introduction. The purpose of the article is the analysis of training translators and interpreters, as well as entrance tests of the master’s interpreting programs in China. As the result of the comprehensive cooperation between China and the whole world, within the Belt and Road Initiative, the demand for multilingual communication specialists, who can provide translation between Chinese and other languages of the world has become obvious. In this regard, the urgency of training translators as well as interpreters has increased with a new force. Aim and objectives. The article is giving description as well as comparative analysis of entrance tests, training programs and the main language combinations, finding the ways of optimizing the training of translators, interpreters, at the same time improving the relevant educational programs in China. Material and methods. The research material was the scientific works of Russian and Chinese researchers on translation studies and simultaneous interpreting, as well as electronic resources, official documents of the official websites of Chinese universities. The study uses the method of comparative analysis to clearly show the situation of the development of training translators and interpreters in China at the present stage. Results and discussion. In recent years, specialized programs have been developed at master’s level for training translators and interpreters – MTI. Here we are going to talk about the interpreting training programs in Chinese schools, which play an important role in the process of rigorous selection of candidates on the basis of competition. This selection has led to the need for more detailed study of master’s interpreting programs in Chinese universities. This article provides a cross-section of the current situation about training interpreters, overviewing training interpreters in some Chinese leading universities and institutes, giving the description and comparative analysis of entrance tests, training programs and the main language combinations, in which training is implemented. In other words, training translators and interpreters in China at the present stage is characterized by rapid development, not so rich teaching experience, official support and centralized planning of the nation. In this case, the entrance tests of the MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) program in Chinese universities are generally divided into two stages: a written exam (ideological and political theory and specialized disciplines), and an oral exam. In this case, Chinese universities check the competencies as well as skills of applicants and decide their specific directions in the specialty after admission to the master’s degree. Conclusion. MTI and BTI programs are rapidly developing at the national level in China. Currently, many universities are training interpreters. In the leading educational institutions of the country, such as Beijing University of Foreign Languages, Shanghai International Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, etc., perfect training programs have already been formed: undergraduate and graduate students receive professional education in the theory and practice of interpreting. Based on extensive data on the frequency of combinations in master’s programs in interpreting and translation, it can be confirmed that English is a universal language, and the status of the Russian language still needs to be improved. | 2340 | Introduction. The article describes the aspects of the metaphorical interpretation of the concept stone, presented in Russian linguistic culture and the system of figurative means of the Russian language. The relevance of the research is due to the scientific interest in the study of the metaphorical functioning of concepts and their figurative language representation in the perspective of the anthropocentric paradigm of linguistics. The aim of the work is to describe the metaphorization of various qualities and properties of a stone for the figurative description of objects of the surrounding reality and the inner world of a person, expressed in the semantics of language units and speech statements. Material and methods. The methodology of the work is based on cognitive, linguistic, cultural and system-structural approaches to the study of the figurative language and speech. The methods of structural-semantic, conceptual and contextual analysis, as well as field modeling and cultural linguistic commentary are used. Empirical material is represented by figurative words and expressions (about 200 units), as well as contexts that demonstrate their metaphorical functioning (about 850 contexts). The sources were the published explanatory and phraseological dictionaries of the modern Russian language and the text base of the National Corps of the Russian language. Results and discussion. As a result, the qualities and properties of the concept being studied were described, which served as the basis for metaphorical projections on figuratively named objects and situations; the lexical and phraseological field of the Russian language is characterized, represented by words and expressions, metaphorically motivated names with the semantics ‘stone’; cognitive models are revealed for which the Stone conceptual sphere is the initial one and serves as a source of the metaphorical characteristics of the phenomena of other conceptual target spheres. The concept of stone in its metaphorical functioning actualizes the following basic features: hardness, strength, heaviness, immobility, color. These qualities of a stone are metaphorically projected onto the properties of various material and non-material objects: objects (hard, lost softness), the human body (heavy, immovable), psychological states of a person (grief, anxiety, depression, torpor), moral qualities (indifference, willpower, responsiveness), mental and social activities (meaningful content, the beginning of activities). Conclusion. The obtained results demonstrate cognitively and axiologically significant fragment of the Russian language world view. The corpus research data testify active metaphoric functioning of the Stone concept in modern discursive practices.
