Krayeva I.A. SPECIFIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH GRADABLE ADJECTIVES’ LEXICOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2019. Issue 4 (201). P. 85-94

The article is devoted to the investigation of ways of representing in English one of the basic universal conceptual categories – the category of graduality. The main aim is to determine specific features of lexicographic description of lexical units that express graduality implicitly in English dictionaries. Modern paradigm of linguistic knowledge – cognitive linguistics – gave an opportunity to look at a number of problems from a new angle, in particular at the formation of the category of graduality and its linguistic representation. Within the framework of cognitive linguistics graduality is rightly viewed as a concept expressed in the language by a category of graduality that includes in the first place quality adjectives because only they can denote some feature that can manifest itself in a higher or lower degr ee and as a result have gradable meanings. The article gives a short survey of present-day opinions on lexical units that express features of objects and new ways of their structural presentation, in particular opinions of leading Russian and foreign linguists – E. S. Kubryakova, N. N. Boldyrev, E. G. Beliaevskaya, L. Talmy. The investigation was carried out on the material of 533 adjectives selected from several authoritative dictionaries of the English language. The author describes the procedure of the conceptual analysis of some frequently used English quality adjectives that have an indication of graduality in their meanings. In the course of the analysis the author makes some conclusions concerning the conceptual structure of English quality adjectives representing graduality implicitly, singles out concepts that serve as a basis for the semantics of the adjectives under analysis and dwells on the peculiarities of their lexicographic description and that of relative adjectives used in their quality meanings. The study shows that the conceptual structure underlying the semantics of English adjectives representing graduality implicitly includes two concepts – “feature” and “feature degree”. The first one has a different semantic representation depending on the meaning of the adjective while the other one expresses the same feature degree in all the meanings (very high, high, low). The research is interesting for further analysis as not only the issue of lexicographic presentation of graduality is of great interest today but also the issue of new approaches and methods of studying graduality, the status of units functioning as means of expressing graduality and some others. All these issues need further investigation on the material of different languages.

Obvintseva O.V., Obvintseva T.O. REPRESENTATION OF THE CONCEPT SCIENCE IN THE STORY “ROADSIDE PICNIC” BY ARKADY AND BORIS STRUGATSKY // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2021. Issue 4 (216). P. 91-99

Introduction. The article describes how the author’s individual concept SCIENCE is represented in a science fiction book “Roadside Picnic” written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. The introduction correlates the concepts of “linguocultural concept”, “literary concept” and “author’s individual concept”, substantiates the key role of the component «science» in expressing the essence of the science fiction genre, describes various methods of representing the linguocultural concept and the author’s individual concept, implemented in the literary text. Aim and objectives. The article aims at the representation of the author’s individual concept SCIENCE in a literary text belonging to science fiction discourse. Material and methods. The material for this research is the story “Roadside Picnic” written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky in the genre of science fiction. The methodological basis of the research is represented by existing cultural linguistic approaches, according to which the linguocultural concept, transformed by the author in accordance with his/her own perception of reality, is represented by means of language in a literary text in the form of a literary (author’s individual) concept. The methodology for describing linguocultural concepts by Z. D. Popova and I. A. Sternin, which is used in this work, includes: etymological and definitional analysis of the concept name, identifying synonyms for the concept name, analysis of paremias and aphorisms, which include the name of the concept, associative experiment, frequency analysis, etc. To represent the linguocultural concept SCIENCE, general linguistic and specialized dictionaries of the Russian language were used. Results and discussion. As a result of the research we have built the structure of the content of the linguocultural concept of SCIENCE in the Russian language, including its conceptual and value parts; have represented the author’s individual concept of SCIENCE, verbalized in the literary text of the Strugatsky story and have carried out a comparative analysis of the content of the linguocultural concept of SCIENCE and the same-name author’s individual concept. Conclusion. It is concluded that the individual author’s concept SCIENCE, represented in the story “Roadside Picnic”, differs from the linguocultural concept SCIENCE in terms of the content of the nominative field: “work, occupation, profession» became the nuclear zone, and a new concept feature “objects of scientific research” appeared, bringing an additional meaning. The evaluative part of the author’s individual concept reflects the Strugatskys’ romantic, emotional view of science as the most important professional activity.

The article is devoted to the research of autobiographical miniature stories of the modern writer Angelika Sumbayeva. Classical works (M. Bakhtin, L. Ginzburg etc.) give the ideas of typological signs of poetics of autobiographical prose of the childhood which are observed in A. Sumbayeva’s prose: psychologism, retrospective view, lyrical modality of the narration caused by the attitude of the storyteller towards the hero. At the same time the volume of a miniature causes features of A. Sumbayeva’s prose: laconicism of descriptions, accuracy in selection of details; transfer of psychological state through nuance, details. The article alalyses in detail the cycle of the stories published in 2010 in the magazine for children “A Yellow Caterpillar” and built according to calendar chronology (winter, spring, summer). In miniature stories the features of art space come to light (including, the use of attributive features of the Siberian region, its climatic originality), functions of gesture, nuance, phrases in the transfer of a psychological portrait of characters, narrative techniques which form the author’s attitude towards the autobiographical character (for example, use of the narration in third person, but transfer of attitude of the child associating reality with the fantastic world through the direct speech). In miniatures there is an image of the natural world of Siberia in general, and the autobiographical image appears as typical, given in circumstances, recognizable, familiar to the Siberian reader. Miniatures of Angelica Sumbayeva recreate the world of childhood as a harmonious, open to the new, capable to take a miracle to transform the ordinary into the world of fairy tales.

Xu J. EUPHONY IN RUSSIAN FOLK TALES // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2020. Issue 2 (208). P. 85-91

Introduction. In modern linguistic science, there has recently been a tendency of typical language-specific study in which euphonia is defined as a typical linguistic characteristic of a literary text. This article discusses the specific properties of words found in fairy tales, and their sound character, which is associated with the phonetic and stylistic features of folklore. The paper comprehensively reviews the functional and rhythmic characteristics of euphony in fairy tales and confirms the specific details of the emotional, artistic and functional impact strategies. The paper is mainly devoted to the study of euphonia in Russian folk tales. And thus, it can confirm the rhythm and melody of the narrative in the development of fairy tales and find that alliteration and resonance are typical expressions of folk tales. As a conventional phonological form, euphony, with a unique study of language style, links authors, fairy tale texts and listeners. This expression of trinity is well shown in the folk tales. Material and methods. The empirical base of the study is 623 titles of Russian folktales collected by A. N. Afanasyev in three volumes. The following research techniques and methods were implemented in the study: a descriptive method, observation and generalization, an interpretative approach; systematization and classification; functional, comparative and statistical analysis. Results and discussion. The results of this work confirm that Russian folk tales are characterized by a diverse euphony as a special and typical repetition of sounds and rhythmic organization, embodying a certain purposeful author’s intention. In the tales of A. N. Afanasyev, the main phonetic expressive means and artistic rhythmic methods are used, the purpose of which is to create euphony – alliteration and assonance. A similar euphony is noted in the beginnings, endings, to represent the development of the plot of the tale. A specific feature of the use of these tools and methods is that they are all closely related, complement, reinforce each other, and effectively contribute to the implementation of the author’s artistic design. Conclusion. Eventually, the author draws the following conclusion that, when using phonetic rhymes, the expressive power in fairy tale, especially the expressiveness at the beginning and ending, can be achieved not only through the use of phonetics and stylistic, but also through the use of rhythmic artistic expression of the author’s descriptions in words, phrases, and paragraphs. The use of alliteration and assonance in Russian folk tales can enhance the imagery and expressiveness of speech, create a favorable sound musical and harmonious effect and allow readers to present the poetic picture of the tale as much as possible.

The main principles for assessing the quality of educational activity are revealed. The article states that the scientific understanding of estimating the quality of educational services in the sphere of the additional professional training does not yet meet the real needs in practice. The results of the study, which determines the need for additional professional education for civil servants in management, are presented. The relationship between the need for additional training and personal attitude to the school has been established. The productivity and effectiveness of the organizational and educational conditions required for the effective implementation and developing the quality assessment model for educational activities in the system of additional professional education for state civil employees are determined. The structural and functional model for the quality assessment of educational services with the participation of consumers is suggested. According to this model selfexamination, introspection and external expertise (reflection, research, design of the educational environment) become the leading methods of the assessment. Thus, the position of the teacher changes. The teacher becomes an expert both in relation to his activity and in relation to the activity of the student, who is also placed in the position of an expert regarding his pedagogical activity and achievements in working with students.

Bodrova A.S. Mentality Duality of a Man of Traditional Culture of Siberia and the North: Combination of Empirical and Mystical Mythological Aspects // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2002. Issue 4 (32). P. 49-55

In this article the duality of mentality of a man of traditional cultures of Siberia and the North is characterized by a combination of empirical and pre-ioglcal elements of mentality. Empirical element of mentality of a man of traditional culture embodies individual practical experience of formal-logical order. But being indifferent to the objective cause and effect relationships of the phenomena, he reveals particular attentiveness to manifested and hidden mystical links between phenomena, the basis of which is the law of mystical contiguity of cause and effect. As a result of domination of such law a man of traditional society makes his behavior in the culture. This explains the duality of mentality of a man of traditional culture of Siberia and the North, whose empirical intuition is subjected to the «supreme collective notions*.
