The article deals with the peculiarities of expressing the category of ‘measure’ in Modern English, which possesses a large gamut of various measures and classifiers, e. g. container measures, group classifiers, mensural classifiers, etc. To gain a better insight into the systemic peculiarities of the conceptual category of ‘measure’ the revealed linguistic means have been gathered into certain groups, which form the structure of the functional-semantic field representing the category under discussion. The core of the field is formed by the terms of the metric system of measurements and the traditional units of measure used in English-speaking countries. The article presents a theoretical analysis of the literature on the problem of studying of pedagogical conditions of adaptation of children in institutions of additional education, which allowed us to determine the key concepts of the study: «additional education», «organization of additional education», «structure adaptation», «conditions», «pedagogical conditions». Identified the relevance and importance of additional education in the adaptation of children of preschool age. Disclosed components of the adaptation of children of this age: personal (self-esteem, confidence, emotional well-being), communication (ability to listen, to empathize, to assess themselves and others, to work in a group of peers, to communicate with seniors, to help others, to explain and prove their own opinion, activity (motivation, activity, curiosity), cognitive (basic beliefs about themselves, about other people and the world, elementary grammar, elementary mathematical representations) components. Justified pedagogical conditions of adaptation of preschool children in the organizations of additional education (the creation of the developing environment: spatial, educational, developmental, subjective; the organization of pedagogical support of adaptation of children, involving the implementation of phases: diagnostic, search, advisory-projective, active, reflective stages; interaction of subjects of education, defined as a joint activity of specialists, teachers, parents, aimed at enabling the child to the environment of supplementary education organizations; individual and differentiated approach to children, determining individual help to each child, taking into account his features and abilities in different situations in the learning process, as well as work in the group of children in which through the selection of content, forms, methods, rates and norms of education are optimal conditions for studying of each child).

Kritskaya Nadezhda Vadimovna FROM THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN-ENGLISH LITERAL TRANSLATION (PECULIARITIES OF INTERPRETATION OF I. A. KRYLOV’S FABLES BY W. R. S. RALSTON) // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2017. Issue 6 (183). P. 112-116

Key peculiarities of literal prose translations of I. A. Krylov’s fables by well-known English slavist and interpreter W. R. S. Ralston are discussed in the article. The book Krilof and his Fables, first issued in 1869, enjoyed a great success and added a considerable contribution to propaganda of Russian culture in England. Lexical, syntactical, and stylistic features of the English texts, as well as difficult for translation cases of rendering of realities and proper names are studied. An attempt to explain the author’s choice of literal (exact) translation against the background of free Russian-English interpretations of the time is provided from the historical point of view. The article shows, that literal prose translation of Russian verse, however condemned as imperfect by modern translatology, was a successful and necessary step in its time, aimed at introducing a famous Russian writer to English readers. Ralston’s attempt was even more significant considering the traditional attitude of British authors to regard the fable as literary genre not just prone to, but also welcoming free interpretational transformations. Objectively lacking idiom, imagery and humour of the original, prose versions of Ralston, nevertheless, retrieved at least the true idea of the original fables contents and provided the readers with reliable image of Russian life and folklore.

Nalitkina Olga Viktorovna ON DEVELOPING MODEL OF APPLYING ONLINE COMPONENT IN SELF-GUIDED FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES AT NON-LINGUISTIC UNIVERSITIES // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2017. Issue 8 (185). P. 15-21

The research concerns the problems of applying textbooks with online components in the organization of selfguided work of students learning foreign languages at non-linguistic universities under modern conditions. We believe that the competences described in the Federal State Standard of Higher Education can not be fully developed in students lacking the necessary knowledge of a foreign language after finishing their secondary education. One more relevant problem arises here, the one of the equalization of the initial level of students’ language skills. The institutions of higher education used to solve this problem by running a correction course, but due to the reduction in the amount of contact hours, we believe it is advisable to organize such work outside the classroom. Such changes will require a careful choice of textbooks. Therefore, we suggest applying a model of work with English textbooks having online components in the organization of students’ self-guided work. We analyze the results of the experiment aimed at the approbation of the technique in question and illustrate them by the statistical data obtained by testing the experimental and control groups. We prove that most language skills improve considerably due to the use of computer learning. Moreover, this pedagogical technique contributes to growing motivation and results in developing necessary competences prescribed by the State standard.

Kafanova Ol'ga Bodovna “THE STORY OF MY LIFE” GEORGE SAND: GENRE SPECIFICITY AND POETICS // Tomsk State Pedagogical University Bulletin. 2018. Issue 6 (195). P. 143-152

The genre specificity and poetics of George Sand’s monumental autobiography has never been in the focus of Russian scholarly attention. This paper focuses on the history of creation and publication of the work (1847–1855). The author describes the poetics of the French writer’s narrative, employing oratory techniques and amplification, which greatly contributes to its perception. A particular attention is paid to the specificity of female memoirs, which consistently describes the development of the main character in childhood, adolescence, youth and maturity. The paper analyses the original composition of the narrative, in which almost a quarter is devoted to ancestors and parents, with whom George Sand’s character is genetically connected. On the one hand, the heroine of the memoirs is a representative of her generation, with whom she is connected by ties of solidarity. On the other hand, she is a child of the revolutionary era, when a marriage between an aristocrat and a commoner could take place. The author studies the history of the inner life, the “life of the soul” of the main character, which consists in the process of looking for the truth in all spheres of life: true friendship, love, religious and political ideas, moral and aesthetic values, and the meaning of life in general. Finally, the heroine finds her “self” in her literary work.
